High Moral Ground II: Are you on the side of the criminals, the police or … the People?

My last blog discussed how the media give the Moral High Ground to anti-gun groups, even though those groups are trying to repress a Constitutionally protected American right. The public is also to blame, however, as we allow anti-gun groups and politicians to define the gun issue with rationalizations that denigrate the American people to murderers and cop-killers eagerly waiting for an opportunity to strike.

Returning to the heavily biased Philadelphia article on the PA court’s support of preemption:

Nutter made his case in stark terms, saying the General Assembly must now decide if it wants to side with cops or criminals when it comes to gun control.

"That's where our focus ultimately has to be," Nutter said of Harrisburg. "People have to make a decision as to what side of the issue you're going to be on."

Hmm. So you’re either on the side of the “cops” or the “criminals.” You have to wonder who’s on the side of the people. You know, the people who the constitution refers to, the people with a protected right to keep and bear arms, and the people who consistently vote for a state legislature that defends gun rights against the nastiest hyperbole that Mayor Nutter can come up with (the NRA may keep their members informed, but it is voters who vote in the legislators). Or maybe the people like those mentioned on this website who are sometimes forced to use guns to defend themselves, and know very well what they risk if they give that right away.

And you wonder why the reporter didn’t look for someone else to comment on this issue, someone with maybe a different perspective who could explain why a majority of Pennsylvania state legislators continue to vote with gun owners. But while that would be balanced, especially given that Nutter is working to limit a civil right, it certainly didn’t happen in this article – or many others of the same ilk.

But this tactic is common, often using the code word “first responders” to refer to police officers. Mayor Daley uses the same rhetoric in Chicago (the original article is gone, but this blog entry has enough to show the intent):

We're talking about putting first-responders in a very, very delicate position of people being armed without being notified how many guns they have in their homes," Daley said. "We have to be able to fashion a law that truly protects first-responders and protects the citizens."

First off, you can talk to any police officer on the street, and they will tell you the same thing. If they know there is a gun in a home/car/wherever, they approach with extreme caution and preparedness. If they don’t know there is a gun in the home/car/wherever, they still approach with extreme caution and preparedness. Because it is the people not supposed to have guns who are the most dangerous.

And not only are law abiding citizens not a danger to police officers, they are occasionally a lifesaver, as can be seen by these stories of armed citizens who came to the aid of police officers in grave danger.

And to put the concept of “support the police or support the criminals” in further perspective, albeit a grim perspective, there were 57 police officers killed nationwide by firearms in 2004. While it is a tragedy that any officer is killed protecting society, disarming the up to 2.5 million civilians who use a gun for self defense (usually without firing it) every year, much less the two hundred civilians a year who actually are forced to use a firearm to kill someone in justifiable self defense, does not seem like a fair tradeoff. Civilians use firearms to kill in self defense nearly as often as police officers.

When we look at the stories of people who have defended themselves with firearms, like this woman in aurora (look partway down the page) who sent a serial rapist running for his life … you have to wonder what kind of person, whether police officer or politician, would choose to have that woman disarmed and viciously raped to protect their lives by some tiny percentage. Is that a tradeoff an honorable, sworn protector of society would make? Or trade that tiny extra bit of safety for the lives of any of the other tens of thousands or even millions of Americans who use guns for defense every year?

One would like to think not. As that is certainly now how any hero of mine would ever feel.

When the media allows rhetoric like this to go uncountered, they honor groups that despise the 2nd amendment and believe that all American Citizens are just a gun purchase away from being a murderer. That is the basic argument behind “but there will be blood in the streets/return to the Wild West/shootouts over parking spaces” rhetoric that such groups repeatedly resort to whenever a discussion takes place about armed citizens (arguments that have been disproven repeatedly as 40 states now allow any law abiding citizen to carry a concealed weapon and the list has been growing for 21 years).

Mayors Daley and Nutter shouldn’t be worrying about whether or not law abiding citizens can own firearms. The First Responders/Cops don’t. They should worry about keeping criminals off of the street and working with the cultures that promote the gangster/drug dealing lifestyle.

Because gun ownership is a right of American Citizens, it is a cornerstone of our liberty and culture, and saves far more lives than it endangers. Both police and civilian.

We need more responsible, armed civilians. Not less.

The laws don’t apply to him

Michael Bloomberg is a swine.  A fascist, authoritarian pig whose putrid face makes me throw up in my mouth every time I see it.  He's universally hated by those who love freedom, and with good reason!  He thinks statism is the answer to everything, and seeks to increase his power and prestige whenever possible.

Of course, this festering douchenozzle has no concept of how to actually uphold the law, and he has no respect for it whatsoever.  This smelly morsel of rotten marmoset shit hired private investigators to intentionally make straw purchases in an attempt to prove how evil gun store owners are.  He violated the law in several states by paying private citizens to purchase guns illegally.  His "investigators" violated the law by providing false information on their ATF Forms 4473.  And frankly, as far as I'm concerned, when you solicit someone to commit a crime, you ought to be prosecuted for it, regardless of whether or not you think your action was somehow justified.

Bloomberg has never been prosecuted for his disgusting behavior, so he continues to have contempt for the law, because - DAMMIT! - he's entitled!  He's the mayor of New York City!  He's rich!  He can do whatever he goddamn pleases!  That's the attitude, and it doesn't just apply to gun control.  You see, Bloomberg wants a third term as mayor.  Badly.  In his disrespectful arrogance, this rotten pile of dung believes he's so good for NYC, that term limits that are currently the law shouldn't apply to him.

Currently there is a two-term limit for the office of mayor, Bloomberg will see to overturn that rule.

The City Comptroller Bill Thompson ...does not support revising the two-term limit law.

"I will be very disappointed if the Mayor attempts to do this to the legislation of the City Council.  He will undermine the will of the voters, who under two occasions have said they believe in term limits. Any change to that law should go back to the public," said Thompson.

Get used to disappointment, Mr. Thompson.  Bloomberg won't let anyone stand in the way of his petty quest for power.

And it's not that I'm a big supporter of term limits.  As far as I'm concerned, term limits should be imposed at the ballot box.  And I believe this despite the fact that I think the majority of the voters are butt-scratching morons!  However, the law is the law, and Bloomberg exhibits a complete disregard and disrespect for it - not for any noble purpose, but for his own power.

Douchebag.

England surrenders… again

I'm sorry, but I had to laugh at this.  Maybe England is really trying to become this weird caricature of a civilized society... Although I'm not really sure how confiscating an elderly man's cane as an "offensive weapon" qualifies... Maybe it's an attempt to ensure a disarmed society, where no one victimizes anyone else, and they all address one another by their honorific.  They seem to think a disarmed society is more polite than an armed one.

Representatives at HMP Wymott, in Lancashire, which is home to 1,000 prisoners, say staff are being marked down in assessments if they can't prove they have treated inmates decently.

In addition to the Prison Service's national "decency agenda", management at the jail, which is run by governor Jayne Blake, say inmates must be addressed as "Mr", followed by their surname at all times.

"Mr. Jones!  Would you please remove your phallus from Mr. Smith's backside!"

"Mr. Brown!  Please stop flinging your excrement at me through the bars of your cell!"

"Mr. Taft!  Please kindly take your hands off Mr. Green's head and allow him to get off his knees!"

Yeah... that'll improve society!

Tennessee: Armed Homeowner Confronts Trailer Thieves

Shelby County, Tennessee

From Eyewitness News of September 30, 2008
Armed Homeowner Confronts Trailer Thieves

Sheriff’s detectives say a Rosemark man held two thieves at gunpoint who tried to steal a utility trailer from his front yard yesterday. Detectives believe the suspects may also be responsible for stealing other utility trailers.

About 11:30 yesterday morning, Steven Rutter, 57, who lives in the 8700 block of Rosemark Road in north Shelby County, heard a vehicle slow down in front of his house. Rutter saw a gray Dodge Ram pickup truck back into his front yard.

Two men then began hooking up Rutter’s utility trailer to the pickup truck. Detectives say Rutter got his pistol and confronted the two men. Initially, Jessie Brown, 51, of Munford and Kelvin Nathaniel, 45, of Drummonds, told Rutter a neighbor said they could use the trailer to move some hay.

Rutter didn’t believe their story and called for Deputies. Moments later, Brown and Nathaniel were taken into custody. Both were charged with Theft of Property.

Detectives say the investigation is continuing and the suspects may be responsible for other utility trailer thefts in Shelby and neighboring counties.

Tennessee: Homeowner Shoots And Kills 19-Year-Old In Self-Defense

Nashville, Tennessee

From News Channel 5 of September 30, 2008
Homeowner Shoots And Kills 19-Year-Old In Self-Defense

Police said a homeowner shot in self-defense when armed suspects tried to rob him overnight.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Monday, 67-year-old Douglas Dabbs pulled into his driveway on Tobylynn Drive and was getting out of his pickup truck when two armed men came up to him and tried to rob him. The two men were identified as Nibeyu Demissew Yosef and Jermichael Jerome Burgy.

Armed with BB guns the two men demanded money from Dabbs. Dabbs said he reached into the console of his truck, retrieved a handgun that fires .410 shotgun rounds and opened fire on the two robbers.

Yosef, 19, was wounded and transported by ambulance to Southern Hills Medical Center where he died shortly after arriving.

Burgy, 23, took off after the shooting, but police later tracked him down at Southern Hills where he was recovering from a non-critical gunshot wound to the head. Police said that Burgy admitted to being with Yosef during the robbery attempt, so police charged him with attempted aggravated robbery.

Police also said that Dabbs does not have a handgun carrying permit, but no charges against the homeowner were anticipated.

Burgy has been lodged in lieu of $80,000 bond. A convicted felon, Burgy had previously been found guilty of aggravated assault in 2006 and has been on probation for that offense. Burgy also has convictions for unlawful gun possession and driving without a license.

Yosef had been issued a total of four state misdemeanor citations in 2007 and 2008 for driving without a valid license.

Police said they were looking into whether this overnight robbery may have been linked to other robberies in the area, or whether this robbery was a random or targeted attack.s

Some relearning

I have been shooting low 20s with a few high teens at trap for a while. I got as high as 24 3 times, but never a 25, and most often only 20 or 21. I found out that the owner of the club I shoot at will give lessons, or at least some help with your shooting, for the cost of shooting. Interesting. So I talked to him, and arranged to work with him tonight. When we started out, he checked my stance, and told me I needed to open up on the first few stations, to be able to turn more easily to my left for hard left targets.

He also said that I should be turning and aiming from my waist, instead of with my arms. looking at it, in a weird way, that may have compensated somewhat for the closed stance, using your arms would give you a little more range, but less control.

Another thing, which I had started to work on, was to use both eyes, not just one. The other part of that was to focus past your gun and the trap house, out onto the field beyond before you call for the target. You can pick up the target with a lot less adjustment for range instead of trying to follow it right out of the house. I also found I wasn’t trying to catch up quite as much when when I was doing it right.

So the big things:

  1. Open my stance, especially on the first 3 stations.
  2. Turn with you body, not your arms.
  3. Both eyes open
  4. Focus past the trap house before calling for the target.

Also, he could tell where I was shooting from the way the targets were breaking, and when I wasn’t shooting right, even if I was hitting the target. For example, shooting over the top, the chunks were going down. Hit the target, but maybe not by much.

Not a total rebuild of my game, but enough changes to take some time to adjust.  When I was doing what he told me (yes, I slipped back into my old habits a few times) I was hitting really well, and I think the adjustments will be worth the effort.

I can definitely recommend working with someone who knows their stuff. They will probably have some insight you can use, and will be able to see what you are doing wrong, and how to correct it.

Be careful, though, because someone can be a great shot and a lousy teacher. If you are paying for lessons, ask around about coaches and teachers in the area, and see what other shooters are saying about them.

Openly Carrying Gun Owners Being Harassed

This is an old (to the blogosphere) story, but it is one that I feel the need to comment on.

In Pennsylvania it is legal to openly carry a firearm in most places. The fact that few take advantage of this right does not negate the right. Open carry is legal. A permit is required for concealed carry and to transport your firearms in your vehicle, but no permit is required for open carry.

Last week a Soccer Mom lost her Concealed Weapons Permit because the Sheriff didn't like the fact that she open carried at a soccer game.

From pennlive.com:

LEBANON -- Officials in Pennsylvania have revoked a woman's concealed-weapons permit because other parents complained that she was carrying her loaded handgun at her daughter's soccer games...

...Sheriff Michael DeLeo says openly carrying a weapon to a youth soccer match shows a lack of judgment.

Meleanie Hain and Her Glock 26

Meleanie Hain wears her loaded Glock 26 on her hip when she attends her 5-year-old daughter s soccer practices and games at Optimist Park. It s not that she s expecting trouble, Hain explains; she carries the weapon everywhere. (Jim Zengerle / Lebanon Daily News)

It bothers me, and it should bother all freedom loving folk, that this Sheriff would attempt to revoke her concealed weapons permit based on what he thinks is a lack of judgement. This woman did nothing illegal. She was not playing with her firearm, drinking alcohol, or threatening anyone. She breaks no laws and gets her permit pulled. It could have been worse.

From Cleveland, another open carry state, we get this news:

Greg Llewellyn, his girlfriend and four friends were sipping hot tea outside a West Side coffee shop on a recent August night when a pair of Cleveland police officers approached with guns drawn.

Get on the ground, an officer ordered, forcing the surprised group to set aside their drinks and hit the sidewalk belly-down. An officer began searching one of Llewellyn's friends before abruptly ending the suspense and demanding to know who had the gun.

"I am the one who has the weapon," the 26-year-old Llewellyn answered. The butt of a black, holstered and loaded CZ-52 pistol -- a Czech-made gun -- was visible tucked behind him in his belt.

The officers arrested him...
These are not isolated incidents. Law abiding citizens are being harassed, humiliated and arrested for doing no more than exercising their natural right to carry the means to defend themselves. This is happening in states where it is perfectly legal to open carry a firearm. These folks are not breaking any laws, yet some LEO's still harass them.

David Codrea has A Plan to Stop Cops from Harassing Openly Carrying Gun Owners in Ohio. Go over and give it a read. This plan, with just minor modifications, can be used in any state or local where the police are just outright harassing citizens who exercise their right to keep and bear arms.

Autumn Is Here

The weeds are turning. Lots of salsola varieties, or tumbleweeds as they are usually known. I've always been partial to weeds, especially as they assume their winter colorations. For a little while this particular variety will assume a deep red with purple tinges. There are about a hundred varieties of tumbleweeds, and in the winter the winds will stack them up along certain fences (usually the north-south running ones, depending on terrain) so thickly that you cannot see the fence itself. It comes as a surprise to most folks that this symbol of the American west is actually an intruder from the Ukraine. Seems like nobody is actually from where they currently are. Which also includes the Native Americans, but that would be another topic.

Virginia: Mother fends off robbers with handgun

Woodbridge, Virginia

From the Manassas Journal Messenger of September 29, 2008
Mother fends off robbers with handgun

Three would-be robbers, one armed with a pair of scissors, walked into a Woodbridge store on Saturday morning with criminal intent.

They left empty-handed and apparently more than a little frightened.

About 11:30 a.m. the three walked into Tienda Hispana Esperanza. One rushed to the counter and pointed the scissors at the owner's neck and another grabbed her son’s arm, the family that owns the store said Monday.

But the owner, Esperanza Salazar, 36, reacted immediately.

She leaned back and reached for her handgun and pointed it at the three unknown males, the Salazar family said.

"It kind of looked like 'The Matrix,' " said 14-year-old Julio Salazar, who was

working at the store with his mother that day.

One of the would-be robbers immediately ran out of the store, located on PR Business Center Drive. A second robber, who wielded the scissors, tried to run out of the store but tripped on a clothes rack and fell. He finally crawled out the front door.

The third robber paused and sat down in a folding chair, putting his hands in the air. When Esperanza Salazar told her son to call 911, the third man ran for the door and momentarily got tangled in the clothes rack before running out of the store.

All three eventually ran toward the back of the business center off Smoketown Road, according to police.

Esperanza Salazar, with her son translating for her, said that while she was nervous, she wouldn't have let anything happen to her son.

The investigation revealed that the three had been loitering outside the store before the robbery attempt, but it was unknown for how long, said police spokeswoman Officer Erika Hernandez.

"Based on the witnesses statements, it appeared they were staking out the business," Hernandez said.

Officers, including a K-9 unit, searched the area and surrounding businesses for roughly 2 1/2 hours but found no one, Hernandez said.

Police said the first would-be robber was described as a Latino man, 30 to 35 years old, collar-length straight hair, with a medium build and a mustache. He was wearing a green sweater with a white T-shirt underneath, a black baseball cap, black sneakers and glasses.

The second robber, who was armed with the pair of scissors, was described as a Latino man, 20 to 21 years old, with a medium build and shoulder-length curly hair, police said. He was wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans and a black cap with letters on the back.

The third robber was described as a Latino male, between 17 and 18 years old, collar-length straight hair, with a medium build and unshaven chin. He was wearing a light brown shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Prince William County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS. Callers don't have to give their names, just the information, and could earn up to a $1,000 cash re-ward.

Even in a tiny kitchen on the road.

I have arrived - multiple flights and no food, not even a pretzel to be handed out. I got to the rental car place only to be told by a very young man "we have no cars". I said "I have a reservation", and he apologized "you're an hour early, in an hour we'll have a car". I'd already heard other people be turned away at the other car places so I said politely "fine, just get my info going and I'll

Faith in the People

Reading stuff like this always helps to renew my faith that We the People still are in control when it comes to deciding the fate of this nation.

Here's why:
"What this showed more than anything else was that not even members of Congress can ignore a switchboard system of Capitol Hill that is so totally jammed," said Peter Sepp, a conservative opponent of the bill with the National Taxpayers Alliance.
I watched President Bush's speech this morning and shook my head. He fell into the same belief trap that too many politicians in this country do. The belief that their position is one of leadership.
"Our economy is depending on decisive action from the government," Bush said. "The sooner we address the problem, the sooner we can get back on the path of growth and job creation. This is what elected leaders owe the American people, and I am confident that we'll deliver."
Most of the time, Main Street America will let the politicians enjoy the fantasy of power on their elite pedestal above us. Most of the time, we'll even let them live that fantasy so long as they aren't screwing with our fundamental values. It's only when the politicians begin to believe that they are truly above us does the rest of the country knock them off for a quick lesson in reality.

The bailout bill didn't fail yesterday because of "lack of leadership" or "partisanship". It failed for the same reason the Comprehensive Immigration Reform failed: We the People decided we didn't want it and put our elected representatives in their proper place.

President Bush didn't get it apparently. We don't want nor are owed "leadership". We want results and we want you to listen to what we're saying and the American people resoundingly are saying "No!" to this idea of a bailout.

Such things renew my faith that this country is not broken. Despite this, they're going to try again. Depressing but not out-of-the-ordinary. Politicians don't like being reminded who butters their bread. That would be us. Get to pulling those levers of power too greedily and we'll smack your hands right off them. Continue and we'll kick your sorry butt right out of the seat you're sitting in and give it to someone else who might be able to listen when the People speak.

Sometimes, folks, you have to listen to what the People want. Have any of these politicians given thought to the idea that maybe we'd rather have short-term hardship than continue to compromise our values in what we think is right and wrong? Despite the variety in beliefs and values, I think most people on both sides of the aisle generally agree in the notion of individual responsibility and we the taxpaying public don't want to be responsible for the bad decisions of others. We'll live with the consequences.

All the negotiating and working with the various House leadership won't change that fact. Continue to push the matter in opposition to what those that vote you into those "leadership" positions want and you'll be finding yourselves back home jobless wondering what the hell happened. Elections can be funny things.

I want to say "Thanks Main Street America!" and keep it up! I agree with what you are doing and I'm grateful that ultimately, we are still control of our destiny.

Judge Restores Grey Wolf’s Endangered Status

U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman in Washington, D.C., said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service could not remove wolves from the endangered species list in the Great Lakes region while wolves remained endangered in other parts of the country. (jsonline.com)

Another instance of a judge sticking his nose in where it doesn’t belong. The fact that animals are underpopulated in certain areas has nothing to do with maintaining proper numbers in other areas. Wisconsin has needed to kill at least 45 wolves this year, when they became a problem to farmers and landowners. With the current rising prices of food, the last thing we need is to increase the liklihood of losses to farmers due to an overpopulation of predators that destroy livestock. Predators that are under no pressure from humans (are not hunted) are going to lose their fear, and become an increasingly large threat. Something like this is best decided on a regional basis, not from a Federal bench in Washington.

Jersey City Gun Control

Well, once again, Mayor Healy has had his head handed to him by the NJ Courts.  If it’s not about his drunken public nuisance charge, it’s about trying to enact local gun control laws in Jersey City.  Last night, while winding down for the evening, 1010 Wins reported that Mayor Healy was willing to go all the way to the US Supreme Court, but I can’t seem to find anything regarding that, but here, it mentions that they’re going to appeal to the NJ Supreme Court.

city attorney Bill Matsikoudis said the appeal to the state Supreme Court would be based on the state’s well-established principle of “home rule,” which he said specifically allows municipalities to “regulate and prohibit” the sale of firearms as they see fit

Don’t know anything about NJ’s principle of home rule, but this will be interesting.

Now, that article also mentions that there’s little Senate support for a State wide *One Hand Gun per Month* Law, which I personally find hard to believe with NJ anti gun legacy.

In this video, you can see Mayor Healy talking trash about PA, since there, you can buy a trunk full of guns.  I’m surprised he didn’t compare PA to the Wild West.  Well, not yet anyway……….

Looks like Mayor Healy is setting his sights on you Sebastian…….

Conversations in a gun nut household

I clear the ParaUSA gun blog 45 and hand it to The Mrs. And the following conversation takes place:

Me: Can you pull the trigger on this?

The Mrs: (points in safe direction and pulls trigger) Yes I can. Why?

Me: Just making sure. You couldn’t pull the trigger on my Sigs. That’s why I have now Glocks.

The Mrs: What?

Me: Well, we went to the range and you couldn’t pull the double action trigger on my Sigs so I sold them and replaced them with Glocks.

The Mrs: That’s so sweet.

It’s the little things.

Guns and the election

We’ve noted how Barack 55378008 Obama is running hard and fast from his anti-gun past quite a few times. If you’re the Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Ownership, that’s gotta sting. I mean, here’s a candidate who has supported every gun control pipe dream you could offer and once the spotlight is on him he drops you faster than a drug dealer can ditch evidence.

His anti-gun past results in the Democrat Leadership Council folks cranking up the false flag group, the American Hunters and Shooters Association.

And now, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership has a page on the 2008 Presidential Candidates
Record and Statements on the Gun Issue
. I’m sure it’s a matter of time before the Obama Truth Squad, Digital Cybernauts, and lawyers demand that they take it down as being untrue. And by untrue they mean politically inconvenient.

Before You Hunt – Vote

To help encourage hunters and shooters to vote absentee if they will be traveling on business or in the field on Election Day, NSSF has developed a poster for shooting ranges and retailers that encourages absentee voting. With a simple headline, "Before you hunt -- Vote," the poster is a great reminder that directs the audience to www.nssf.org/VoterEd for access to information about absentee voting in every state. You can help: Download, print and hang the poster prominently at your business to remind your staff and customers.

Majority Rule

Wilkinson said elected officials are in a better position to determine gun laws than the courts.
Yeah, leave it up to Carolyn McCarthy and Alcee Hastings to pick and choose from the rights menu! And in other areas, elected officials can roll back proscriptions on slavery, bring back official state religion, etc., etc.

Here's living proof that republican presidents don't necessarily make good judicial picks. If you don't mind, Wilkie-boy, I'll defer to a superior jurist on this, William Rawle, who wrote:
No clause in the Constitution could by any rule of construction be conceived to give the Congress a power to disarm the people. Such a flagitious attempt could only be made under a general pretence by a state legislature. But if in any pursuit of an inordinate power either should attempt it, this amendment may be appealed to as a restraint on both.
But duck out on the last means of peaceable redress if you will, judge. Gee, what could possibly go wrong with that plan?

Cloistered elitist moron.
