Will… not… blog… about… economics! Must… RESIST!

by Nicki September 29, 2008 The Liberty Zone

I’m trying, folks!  I’m trying really hard!  I will say this:  some Congressleeches finally listened to their constituents, and despite sanctimonious blathering by Barney Frank (D-umbass, MA) and shrill screeching by Darth Skeletor Pelosi (D-imwit, CA) about how the current “emergency” is all the fault of the BushCoHalliburton Evil Rethugnican Machine, the bailout bill rewarding irresponsible behavior on the part of certain financial firms and homeowners FAILED.

And somehow the world goes on. And while credit is tight, there’s no freeze. Qualified borrowers – read that QUALIFIED borrowers – can still get money.

That’s all I’m going to say about the economy.  I’m not going to reiterate that this “crisis” is partially manufactured by the politicians and ardently supported by the media conspicuously in time for Election 2008.  I’m not going to point out that only a small percentage of mortages are actually in trouble, and that overall, our economy isn’t crashing around our nipples.

I’m just going to sit back and watch the mad scramble for yet another compromise, and then ensure that I pull the lever against every single incumbent that voted for this bailout on Election Day.

Meanwhile, across the pond…

Police confiscate a walking stick from a 78-year-old man, because they claim it’s an “ffensive-weapon.html”>offensive weapon.”

With his white hair, wax jacket and glasses, 78-year-old Philip Clarkson Webb clearly ticked all the boxes any eagle-eyed policemen would mark as ‘danger’.

And as he shuffled along the pavement towards them there was one thing above all they deemed to pose a threat – his walking stick.

The officers surrounded the retired classics teacher and informed him the 3ft wooden cane was an ‘offensive weapon’ and had to be confiscated.

Philip Clarkson Webb

Yeah, this guy looks ridiculously dangerous.  After all, he was spotted by the authoritarian swine near a *GASP!* protest rally!!  Never mind that Mr. Clarkson was not one of the activists at the climate camp but was there to attend a seminar on trade energy quotas!  I would not just disarm him, I’d wrestle him to the ground, boys!  After all, you can’t possibly take any chances with the safety and security of the British sheep, can you?

OK, seriously… is this REALLY the birthplace of the Magna Carta?  The Great Charter of Freedoms?

One commenter on the story said it best:

They are pathetic and out of control. And that’s just the police!! What on earth is happening in this country? As much as I’d like to, can/should this all be laid at the feet of this useless government?

- Bob Baillie, Southampton, 30/9/2008 11:04

This is what happens when you infringe upon the people’s right to self defense and prevent them from taking responsibility for their own lives and property.  Said lives and property become meaningless.  People lose respect for themselves and their rights, and the few who dare challenge and resist the state and who dare defy the edicts that endanger themselves and their families are promptly prosecuted.  And what they’re left with is a bunch of statist pigs who are so afraid of dissent and resistance, that they attack an innocent old man on the street in fear that he might use whatever is available to him as a weapon.

Britain surrendered a long time ago.  The time to wave “Goodbye” is long past due.

A cert petition to watch

by Of Arms and the Law September 29, 2008 Arms & The Law

Question: is a requirement of unanimous vote to convict part of the Sixth Amendment, and is it incorporated against the States? The petition for cert. is up for vote in the first conference of the Supremes, likely to be announced in a few days.

The Sixth Amendment on its face says nothing about the question, but as the petition notes, it’s quite clear that that was the practice, and the understanding, at the framing period. The idea of decision by less than a majority was, I suspect, an innovation of overloaded courts. The issue puts a judicial decisionmaker in a bit of a dilemma. The Sixth calls for juries “in all criminal proceedings,” but the practice has been to limit them to major criminal cases, based on framing-era practices. I can’t easily see how that can be reconciled with allowing less than unanimous findings, based on the same practices.

More Gunz N Mexico

by jr September 29, 2008 A Keyboard and a .45

In the initial post Gunz N Mexico I referenced an article in the Dallas Morning News that quoted an ATF agent as stating…

“Right now, we know Texas is the No. 1 source of weapons smuggled into Mexico, with most of them coming from Houston and Dallas,” Mr. Webb said.

Now the ATF is targeting California as a major supplier of guns to the Mexican drug gangs. But wait, California? Don’t they have strict gun laws that would prevent the gangs from getting the guns in the first place? Heck, they don’t even allow folks to buy guns at gun shows.

The ATF explains in the article Guns move south via Inland gangs:

The majority of guns moved through California come from other states, such as Arizona and Nevada, where laws are less restrictive than California’s 30-day waiting period and assault rifle ban. The weapons can then be transported south, but local authorities believe a portion of them remain in Inland cities.

Okay, it is the other states fault that California gangs have guns. More of the same ‘ol same ‘ol. How about we start holding California responsible for exporting the extremely violent gangs that cut their teeth in Los Angeles to us? These gangs are now nation wide and guns, drugs, money and bodies travel North, South, East and West without hindrance. Maybe if California would put an end to the gangs, they would put an end to the majority of their drug/gun problems.

Earlier in the article the author stated:

ATF estimates that 95 percent of the weapons currently in Mexico are American made and a portion are moving south of the border through the Inland region.

That is a pretty easy estimate for the ATF to make. The Mexican military and police purchase their firearms from American manufacturers. So yes, since Mexican civilians are not allowed to own firearms for protection, at least 95% of the firearms in Mexico are held by the military and police and therefore are made in America. Some guns may even be smuggled into Mexico from California, so that part of the statement is also easy to make. But let us be honest here folks, it is no secret that corruption runs rampant in the Mexican military and throughout many of their police forces. Many, I would even say a majority, of the firearms in the hands of the drug cartels come directly from the Mexican military and police forces. Other guns cross Mexico’s Southern border. This blaming Americans for the drug gang problems in Mexico is just plain lucridous and it has gotten beyond annoying.

The drug gangs on both sides of the border are evil, violent atrocities that should have never been allowed to grow into the cancer that they have become. But don’t blame gun shows and Americans for their existence, and stop blaming us for the guns that they have accumulated.

Steve over at The Firearm Blog posted this image of members of the Mexican military on parade with Barrett .50BMG’s. How long do you think it will be before some of these are in the hands of the drug gangs? Remember this image when the ATF and a compliant news organization starts bemoaning the influx of .50 caliber weapons in the hands of the drug gangs.
