Pfleger’s Anti-Gun Eulogy for Kiyanna Salter Ignores Reality

by LearnAboutGuns.com October 13, 2008 Learn About Guns

Kiyanna Salter was a 17 year old girl who was taking the bus near 71st and Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago. Two other passengers accidentally bumped into each other somehow, and an argument ensued. Each of those two passengers brandished handguns that they were illegally carrying. One of the two passengers, who [...]

FUEL FOR THE FILES

by Brigid October 13, 2008 Home on the Range

Back to the office after 15 days away. Shouldn’t be too much of a mess as I have a great Administrative Assistant. You don’t dare call him a “secretary” as he’s an ex Army specialist and he’s quite rugged. I’m training him in a lot of the technical aspects of the job, as he’ll go far, but for now I can rest assured that my office won’t be a disaster. But I will need some fuel to tackle the

WSJ weighs in on the 95% claim

by Peter October 13, 2008 Firearms and Freedom

One of Barack Obama’s most potent campaign claims is that he’ll cut taxes for no less than 95% of “working families.” He’s even promising to cut taxes enough that the government’s tax share of GDP will be no more than 18.2% — which is lower than it is today.
It’s a clever pitch, because it lets [...]

Heller team reply on motion for attorneys’ fees

by Of Arms and the Law October 13, 2008 Arms & The Law

Here, in pdf. As might be expected, it is well-written and merciless. In trying to hold the award down, DC apparently argued that it was a perfectly ordinary appeal, so Gura takes all their requests for extensions of time, which universally claimed that it was unbelievably complex, and sticks it in their craw. It ends with

“Defendants’ accusations of “windfall” are wholly unjustified, factually and legally.

Public interest law does not create great wealth, and this case would be no exception. Awarding
the full amount of the fee request will not bring Plaintiff’s counsels’ profits per partner anywhere
near the levels routinely enjoyed by Defendants’ attorneys. When public interest lawyers who
have risked significant amounts of their time and money vindicating a dormant civil right seek
fair compensation after years of being paid nothing, charges of avarice are inappropriate and not
well-taken.”

Chicago Is More Dangerous Than Iraq

by LearnAboutGuns.com October 13, 2008 Learn About Guns

I read an interesting post which pointed out that more Chicago residents have been killed than US soldiers in Iraq this summer – by a factor of 2!  This is despite Chicago’s longstanding handgun ban.
A map of the Chicago shootings for Summer 2008 has also been created.
It is worth nothing that overall violence in Iraq [...]

Hunt Like a Girl

by jr October 13, 2008 A Keyboard and a .45

Some of my fondest memories from my childhood are of dove and pheasant hunting with my Dad and his friends. Those were special times that I cherish.

ABC News ran an interesting segment and article on girl hunters.

By Gigi Stone

What might seem fun to most 9-year-old girls doesn’t hold much interest for 9-year-old Carolyn White from Dallas, Texas. She thinks Barbie dolls and trips to the mall are boring. She prefers spending Saturdays hunting with her father. ” It’s wonderful. You feel like you can do anything and it’s really cool.”

Hunting schools for girls designed to encourage participation in sport. This particular Saturday, Carolyn killed her first deer, as part of an all-girls hunting trip at Wildcat Mountain Ranch in Robert Lee, Texas. It is one of a number of supervised all-girls hunting trips that state wildlife officials are organizing around the country in an effort to attract girls to try to help keep hunters from becoming an endangered species…

All in all a pretty good article. There is, of course, the Humane Society obligatory quote, but that is more than offset by the words of the girl hunters.

New book on the Heller case

by Of Arms and the Law October 13, 2008 Arms & The Law

It’s due out in November, but can be pre-ordered. Author is Reason magazine’s Brian Doherty, publisher is the Cato Institute. Here’s a Cato video on the Heller case. Press release says:

In Gun Control on Trial, journalist Brian Doherty tells the full story behind the landmark District of Columbia v. Heller ruling. With exclusive, behind the scenes access throughout the case, Doherty delved into the issues of this monumental case to provide a compelling look at the inside stories, including:

The plaintiffs’ fight for the right to protect themselves and their families from violent neighborhoods.
The activist lawyers who worked exhaustively to affirm that right.
The city officials who fought any attempt to give citizens the right to self-defense.
The story of the Heller case stretches back to long before the decision struck down D.C.’s restrictive gun ban and forward to the future of the political and legal battle over gun control in America. Doherty provides clear, concise explanations of the issues and battles that have driven the gun control debate for decades, detailing how the Heller decision is a new starting point for the gun control debate as it passionately and energetically continues in the years ahead.

Volunteers Needed

by jr October 13, 2008 A Keyboard and a .45

Last Saturday I could not assist the Bill Zedler campaign because work got in the way. While folks were out pounding the pavement for Representative Zedler, I was at work fixing a ruptured water pipe. To make up for missing out last weekend, I have agreed to put together at least two teams of walkers this Saturday (the 18th) to help encourage folks to make it to the polls and vote for Bill Zedler. Early voting starts next Monday so it is very important to make that personal contact with prospective voters right away.

We will meet at my house early Friday evening for orientation, then hit the streets at 0900 Saturday morning. If you want, I can do burgers and beer when we finish up on Saturday.

Representative Zedler is a strong supporter of our right to keep and bear arms, it is time for us to support him and help to keep him in office.

Let me know in comments or by email.

Brady Campaign endorses Obama-Biden ticket

by Of Arms and the Law October 13, 2008 Arms & The Law

From their press release:

“The difference between the two tickets is clearest with regard to assault weapons. Senator Obama made his position clear in his acceptance speech in Denver when he said “the reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don’t tell me we can’t uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals.” And Senator Biden helped get a ban on assault weapons passed in 1994 and fought for its renewal in 2004.

“Senator McCain, however, opposed the assault weapon ban in 1994 and voted against its renewal in 2004. McCain’s running mate, Governor Sarah Palin, told ABC’s Charles Gibson that she also opposed a ban on assault weapons, saying that they were part of her “culture”.
………
“Along with Sarah and Jim, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and its dedicated network of Million Mom March Chapters strongly endorses the Obama-Biden ticket and encourages our supporters to vote for them on November 4, 2008.”
