Songs in the wind

---

When it’s real quiet, do you ever “hear” music when a fan motor or the Air Conditioner is running?

The songs I “hear” with choir-like voices:

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Auld Lang Syne
God Bless America

This is my personal affirmation that my soul is content and that I am a good and rightous human being, endowed with a positive patriotic spirit.

So today I was interviewed with two tough questions:

“What is the best advice you’ve ever given?” and “What is the best advice you’ve ever received?”

“Buy low - sell high” is a good answer to both questions, but the truthful and more encompassing answer is “Be to be true to yourself and follow the Golden Rule - be honest in all your endeavors, for credibility lost is never fully regained.”

That is the standard I try to live by.

Maybe it’s just me and my American Indian heritage, but does anyone else hear songs in the wind?

Merry, Merry Month of May Indy Blogmeet!

The Best BBQ I've sampled north of the Mason-Dixon is the objective for this month's blogmeet (and delicious salmon for those who don't do the swine, although I have to say that Locally Grown Gardens' smoked pulled pork would make a rabbi kick a hole in a stained glass window...)

Obligatory Religious Food Joke:

Back in the days of mandatory meatless Fridays for Catholics, a Protestant moved into a largely Catholic neighborhood. His first Friday there, he drove the neighbors around the bend by throwing some ribeyes on the grill, their scent wafting about and tantalizing people dining on fish filets.

The next Friday, same thing.

On the third Friday, a delegation of neighborhood elders showed up on his doorstep and convinced him to renounce his Protestant ways. Water was sprinkled. "You were born a Protestant, you were raised a Protestant, and now you're a Catholic."

On the fourth Friday, just as everybody settled down to their dinner of whitefish and fries, the scent of seared beef floated over the neighborhood. Outraged, the leading lights of the village ran down to the new guy's house and peered over his fence to see him sprinkling water on a huge slab of beef, intoning "You were born a steer, you were raised a steer, and now you're a fish."

Quote of the Day – Renaissance Festival Edition

That whole corner of the world is like a Renaissance Festival gone amok; one where the participants don’t take off their medieval garb and come back to the 21st Century at the end of the day, because it’s never Miller Time in a country where booze is illegal and most anything fun can result in having various bits chopped off in a court of law. – Tam

Interesting

Catching up at Say Uncle’s, I ran across this:

FBI Data On officers killed in the line of duty. Down 17 from last year

Great news. Fewer officers killed in the line of duty is a Good Thing.

Then there was this:

Beretta: First quarter sales are up 66% compared to last year.

And this:

Sturm, Ruger’s corporate report, in pdf. Firearm sales up 55%, production up 69%, but not keeping pace with demand, backorders are up to nearly half a million firearms

Huh. People must be growing immune to the mind control waves from guns that make you want to shoot people. Or maybe, More Guns = Less Crime, or at least fewer officer homicides. At worst, the two are not linked.

‘The owners’ manual for Congress’

Jeff Soyer notes NY Congressman Eric Massa (D-Corning) speaking to high schoolers:

After a question about gun control, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a copy of the U.S. Constitution.

“This is the owners’ manual for Congress,” he said, flipping to the section containing the amendments and reading the second amendment, the one that establishes the right to have a militia and to bear arms.

“I will not, have not and won’t vote for any new gun control regulations,” he said. “We have not begun to enforce the laws we have.”

Campus Carry Update

The Texas House just called a dinner recess until 7:15. HB 1893, the House version of the bill, is on the Calendar to be heard by the House. The only problem is that the Calendars Committee placed it so far down the calendar that it is likely time will run out before the bill is addressed.

The Senate version of the bill, SB 1164, has passed the State Affairs Committee with a vote of 6 to 3. SB 1164 now needs the votes of 21 Senators to make it to the Senate floor. With the likelihood of HB 1893 being left on the calendar, the Senate Bill is our best chance to get this legislation passed. First, we need the 21 votes to get it to the floor, then we need a simple majority to get it passed the Senate.

So please contact your Senator and let them know that SB 1164 deserves a vote on the Senate floor and that you would appreciate their support for this important bill.

DUH for the Day

Nothing really special in this story about a little munchkin who unbuckled himself while in grandma's car, put the car in drive, and hit a street sign, except the last line of the story.

Police said the toddler did not have a previous record.
Um... DUH!

Urgent!

The Senate version of the Texas Campus-Carry bill (SB1164) was voted favorably from the Senate State Affairs Committee. We now need 21 Senators to vote to get this bill to the Senate floor for debate and an up-or-down vote.

It is vitally important that you call your Senator and ask that they support SB 1164. Now that this bill has made it through committee, Senators who had backed us are turning against us. It appears that some politicians backed this bill when they thought it did not have a snowballs chance in Hades of getting to the floor. Now that we are being successful, they are turning against us.

I'm still at work so this is all I have time to post right now

Pennsylvania Public Supports Game Commissions Management Of Bears

Pennsylvania Public Supports Game Commission’s Management Of Bears

Pennsylvania Game Commission

Pennsylvania Game Commission

HARRISBURG, PA – -(AmmoLand.com)- In a recent survey of Pennsylvanians, 63 percent of respondents believe the Pennsylvania Game Commission is doing a good to excellent job managing black bears. The survey also stated that only five percent of residents have had a problem with a bear in the last two years.

The survey, which was called for by the Game Commission’s black bear management plan, was conducted by Responsive Management, a natural resources public opinion firm based in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and released to the Board of Game Commissioners at its recent meeting. The four objectives of the survey were to determine public opinions about current bear population levels; types and frequency of bear-human conflicts; public opinions on bear hunting and methods; and knowledge about bears in Pennsylvania.

“What this survey tells us is that most local bear populations appear to be at or slightly above social carrying capacity, which is the population threshold where people no longer desire more bears,” said Mark Ternent, Game Commission bear biologist. “Of those who responded, 59 percent believe the bear population in their county should remain the same – a view shared by both hunters and non-hunters.

“Among the minority who would like to see an increase in their area’s bear population, 78 percent only want a small to moderate increase. Also, 40 percent of respondents want bear populations in their county, but not in their city or township.”

Ternent said the survey shows that there is strong support for managing bear populations, as 79 percent either strongly or moderately agree that bear populations should be managed to control population size.

“Even in the southeast portion of the state, where bears and human-bear conflicts are relatively uncommon, 77 percent of people agree that controlling bear populations is important,” Ternent said. “Also, 70 percent of Pennsylvania residents support the regulated hunting of bears.”

The survey noted that five percent of Pennsylvanians have had a problem with a bear in the past two years. Yet 50 percent of problems are with birdfeeders and 40 percent involve garbage cans/dumpsters. Thus, limiting bears access to birdfeeders or garbage could potentially eliminate up to half of the human-bear conflicts. Of those who had a problem with bears, only 19 percent said that they reported it to the Game Commission.

“What this means is that our perception of conflicts is only about one-fifth of those occurring,” Ternent said. “However, 42 percent of the bear problems reported to the Game Commission are handled at the time of reporting by providing advice/information over the phone, and 51 percent of people reporting a bear problem to the Commission were satisfied with the response or service they received.

“People have an interest in bears, yet know little about them. Self-professed knowledge about black bears among Pennsylvania residents is low; only one of four say that they know a great deal or moderate amount about bears, while three-quarters say that they know a little or nothing. Information about bears, their ecology and management in Pennsylvania is available on the Game Commission’s website at www.pgc.state.pa.us, click on Wildlife and select “Black bear.”

To view a copy of the 500-page survey, go to the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on “Hunting” in the left-hand column, click on the photo of the bear, and scroll down to “Pennsylvania Residents’ Opinions On and Attitudes toward Black Bears.”

NASHVILLE, TN - -(AmmoLand.com)- Sabre Defence Industries, Match Sponsor for the Sabre Defence Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun Competition held on April 24 – 26, 2009, at the Rockcastle Shooting Center in Park Mammoth Resort, Kentucky proved a resounding success. There were four different classes including; Open, Tactical Scope, Tactical Iron, and Heavy Metal in which participants faced ten stages of fire featuring some very tough Kentucky terrain and unique set-ups such as tunnels, swinging targets, and a Texas Star.

National Rifle Association President, John Sigler; Board Member, Bill Carter; and Mike Krei, Director of the Competitive Shooting Sports for the NRA, attended on Day Two of the event. Both Sigler and Carter greeted competitors, toured the stages and even took part in a bit of shooting. Committee members for the Committee of the Competitive Shooting Sports for Multi-Gun Competition all pitched in to honor Mike Krei and John Sigler with custom rifles in honor of the hard work of the NRA to add the Multi-Gun Competition. Committee members in attendance were Greg Coker of LaRue Tactical; John Paul of JP Enterprises; David Power of Sabre Defence; Andy Horner, the Match Director for the Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun; and Denise Johnson, the Match Director for the Rocky Mountain 3-Gun. “The National Rifle Association was proud to be the sanctioning authority for the Sabre Defence Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun Championship held at the Rockcastle Shooting Center from April 24-26, 2009,” NRA President John Sigler said. “The Center was the perfect venue for this unique championship. This facility has huge potential for future competitive, educational, and community events. The organizers and the sponsors of this event as well as the host venue should be proud of this great championship tournament that pitted competitive shooters from across the country against each other, the terrain and the great target selection. Every competitor to whom I spoke truly enjoyed their trip to the Rockcastle Shooting Center and all are anxious to return next year.”

At the end of Day Three, Daniel Horner, representing the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) won the 3-gun competition with a final score of 1400 points to win the Sabre Defence Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun Championship Title. Bruce Piatt came in second place with a score of 1129.46.

BRM3G and Sabre Defence supported the Wounded Warrior Foundation during the match and donations raised $4,080 for the foundation. Sabre Defence raffled off a Sabre rifle with all monies going towards the WWF. The winner of the Sabre rifle raffle was Ryan Ervin. Overall, the Sabre Defence Blue Ridge Mountain 3-Gun Match has found a home at the Rockcastle Shooting Center and next year promises to be even more exciting than this year.

Summit Gun Broker Offers Low-Cost Sigs. Act Now!

Value Alert: You might be interested in Summit Gun Broker's low-cost Sig Sauer pistols. The P6 is a 9mm German police trade-in for only $395.00 each. Such a bargain! Buy two; they’re cheap. Don’t read gun law books at a Public Library

You’re liable to meet up with the Police.

Seems an 11th-grader wanted to look up gun carry and concealment laws in Pelham Manor NY, and the Libarian called the Police.  But it’s all just hunky dory since it’s viewed that the Librarian took a *responsible* step.

But according to the Annoyed Librarian,

Urban Mayors’ Party Affiliation Linked to Poverty

The beautiful Ala, who blogs as Blonde Sagacity notes the strong connection between poor cities and their Democratic overlords:

What do the top ten [U.S.] cities (over 250,000 population) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954;

Cincinnati, OH (3rd)...since 1984;

Cleveland, OH (4th)...since 1989;

Speaking of poor cities: In District health news, at least three percent of city residents have HIV/AIDS. This is above the one percent threshold which constitutes a "generalized and severe epidemic." Source, Washington Post.

Sad quote from the director of DC's HIV/AIDS Adminstration:

"We have every mode of transmission" -- men having sex with men, heterosexual and injected drug use -- "going up, all on the rise, and we have to deal with them," [Shannon L.] Hader said.

If you want a good life, stay away from alcohol abuse and drug abuse. If you can't stay sober on your own, get help fighting alcohol addiction. Stop using drugs. I've written before about avoiding poverty. If you shoot drugs, you run a huge risk of premature death. Is the high worth it?

FN SLP named NRA Shotgun of the Year

FN SLP named National Rifle Association ‘Shotgun of the Year’

FNH USA

FNH USA

McLean, Va.- -(AmmoLand.com)- FNH USA proudly announces the selection of the FN SLP by the National Rifle Association (NRA) as “Shotgun of the Year.”

The modular FN SLP is a hardworking shotgun that ships with two gas pistons – for heavy and light loads — to offer the operator more flexibility and longer life. A variety of shotgun choke tubes and accessory sporting barrels are also available for the SLP.

The reliability of the SLP is well documented along with its nimble cycling speed and light felt recoil. It is ideal for a wide variety of applications in law enforcement, tactical, personal security, and competition.

The NRA judges commented, “Based on the Browning Gold and Winchester Super-X design, the short-stroke, gas-operated semi-automatic SLP has a host of features that drew us to it, including: pistons for both heavy and light loads; a safety than can be reversed for left-handers; an 18” 12-ga barrel with a 3” chamber and compatibility with standard invector choke tubes; an extended magazine tube; a protected front post with a white aiming dot and, in the rear, an adjustable ghost-ring flanked by two white dots and mounted on a Picatinny rail; and a 1” thick ventilated rubber recoil pad.

And when it came to shooting performance, we judged the SLP to . . . (exhibit) commendable slug accuracy, consistent pattern density with buckshot and excellent functional reliability. Handling was also note-worthy, with quick cycling and minimal muzzle rise. . . The FN Self-Loading Police shotgun is simple, reliable and rugged, offering solid performance and a proven design.”

All you need to do is enter your name and zip code and a pre-written message will be routed directly to YOUR legislators. It’s that easy.

Click on the link to learn more. Remember, it is only through YOUR financial support that we are able to provide these services and protect our outdoor heritage. The NJOA is an all-volunteer organization, so help us to help you by becoming an honorary member…

And please forward this email to friends, family and any outdoor-minded person - or use the “Tell-A-Friend” link provided.

Well, shoot. Now what excuse do we use?

Sticking to Plan A

---

I just Google-Earthed the distance from my place to Phoenix - breifly entertaining the thought of rumbling to the NRA Blog Bash via Harley.

1,047 miles.

Hmmm…

I’m sticking to Plan A, which is a First Class seat on American.

Norton Internet Security 2009 Lies

---

I clicked in my newly installed and updated Norton Internet Security 2009 icon and saw that my virus definitions were updated “three minutes ago“.  ORLY? How’s that?

I then ran “Live Update” and it installed 2 new updates.

Seems the virus update message was a bit of a lie.

Dang, Pete.
