Recollection appropriate to Memorial Day….

by Of Arms and the Law May 31, 2010 Arms & The Law

A friend told me of having been at a Thanksgiving dinner, where the diners were mostly older ladies, but included one retired Army colonel who’d served in Korea. The former were making lengthy conversation on topics that males regard as torture, and they eventually got around to “What is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen?” One described a sunset in detail, several named their grandchildren, etc., etc. Finally, one of them asked the colonel what was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen.

He replied that at one point in Korea his unit was holding a ridge when the Chinese came on, shouting, in a human wave attack meant to overrun their position by sheer human mass. But his unit had a .50 Browning M-2, and the gunner slowly swept the onrushing attack from side to side. It was just like mowing down grain, the colonel said, except that grain doesn’t go flying backward when you cut it. He smiled at the memory, even seemed a bit misty-eyed, as he finished “and that was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen.”

The conversation went into a lengthy pause at that point….

R. Lee Ermey alive, report of death a hoax

by Of Arms and the Law May 31, 2010 Arms & The Law

This morning I posted from an email report that R. Lee Ermey had died. This was shown to be a hoax by the best possible evidence: a commenter just saw him in Washington’s Memorial Day parade!

Anyway, here’s my Dad’s webpage (I’ve got to clean up the html when I have time). He grew up in a one-room adobe cabin, no electricity or water, walls consisting of sheets hung from the ceiling, and lived to see the 21st century.

RIP, Gunny Sergeant

by Of Arms and the Law May 31, 2010 Arms & The Law

I am informed that R. Lee Ermey has died in San Diego of complications from pneumonia. Same thing got my father in 2001.

For the young ‘uns with parents yet living … watch out for pneumonia. It starts out in the lungs, of course, and a good immune system will kept it there, while showing dramatic symptoms — fever and chills, etc.. But with older folks, the immune system is weaker, and it can get into the bloodstream — septicemia — which it attacks everything at once, and sends the person into shock, circulatory collapse. With the compromised immune system, the serious symptoms don’t show, and the shock appears to be napping, but blood pressure is zilch and after half an hour of that the kidneys fail. With my father, the young docs in the hospital didn’t realize this, just gave him antibiotics for the pneumonia. My sister visited and realized he couldn’t be awakened. Blood pressure was incredibly low, and he never came out of the coma.

Would Obama have prosecuted him?

by Nicki May 31, 2010 The Liberty Zone

An octogenarian took positive steps to protect himself and his wife from a violent home invader.  He did what was necessary to protect his life and the life of his loved ones by shooting an armed thug who broke into his home. The Army veteran had been robbed previously, and the piece of shit that broke into his home had a history of drug and weapons convictions.  Oh… and he shot first.

Unfortunately, this incident happened in Chicago, where the only people who can use a gun are police, security shitbags who protect Dick Daley at taxpayer expense, even as he works to disarm the very people who pay to protect his worthless hide, and criminal thugs.

Would Obama have prosecuted this hero for taking a piece of festering shit off the streets for good – something that police haven’t been able to do?

Yeah.  Probably.

“As an Illinois State Senator, Barack Obama voted not once, but twice in opposition to Senate Bill 2165,” recalled Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

The so-called “Hale DeMar Act” – named for a Wilmette, IL resident who shot a burglar with a handgun, a violation of Wilmette’s handgun ban- was passed in March 2004 on a 38-20 vote. Obama was one of the senators voting against the measure. After disgraced former Gov. Rod Blagojevich vetoed the bill, the Senate voted to override the veto on Nov. 9 by a vote of 40-18. Again, Obama was one of the opponents.

It always appalls me to see politicians who take their own safety for granted because the very people who put them in office fund their ARMED security work to unilaterally make those same people vulnerable to armed thugs!  They live at taxpayer expense, sucking on the public trough for decades, they have armed security, live in gated communities and never worry about the security of their loved ones.  Their safety is funded by the very same people whom they try to disarm!

And if one of those people dares defend their lives and their loved ones despite the politicians’ best efforts, they’re prosecuted! They waste countless resources and nerves defending themselves against assaults on their very lives! First, by the armed street thugs, and then by the self-righteous, power-hungry politician thugs?

This is justice?

By what standard?

Britain to Greece

by Nicki May 31, 2010 The Liberty Zone

Please, just go away.

THE Greek government has been advised by British economists to leave the euro and default on its €300 billion (£255 billion) debt to save its economy.

The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), a London-based consultancy, has warned Greek ministers they will be unable to escape their debt trap without devaluing their own currency to boost exports. The only way this can happen is if Greece returns to its own currency.

Greek politicians have played down the prospect of abandoning the euro, which could lead to the break-up of the single currency.

Speaking from Athens yesterday, Doug McWilliams, chief executive of the CEBR, said: “Leaving the euro would mean the new currency will fall by a minimum of 15%. But as the national debt is valued in euros, this would raise the debt from its current level of 120% of GDP to 140% overnight.

Their debt level would skyrocket, lenders would stop lending to them, they’d have no money, and MAYBE then they’d be forced into some degree of fiscal responsibility!  Maybe.

Lending more money to Greece to help them pay off their debts is like giving Jack Daniels to an alcoholic, hoping that this last drink will help stave off the shakes. Greece is an addict. Stop giving them money, and force them into some degree of fiscal responsibility!

Devaluing their currency and leaving the Euro means default. It means German and French banks are hugely at risk, and there’s a massive change of contagion.

But really, what other option do they have?  Handing them more cash is obviously not going to do any good.
