Time to Saddle Up

by Brigid September 2, 2010 Home on the Range

Time to saddle up and head North. This was a very busy working week down in the fair State of Texas (look, I was married to an Aggie, one whose family raised Longhorns, so I still feel at home down here).I DID have time to have dinner last night before I left, with Christina, JPG, the epitome of what a Texas gentlemen is, and his lovely bride Holly B (their links on my friends sidebar). I’d been

*cracks head against wall*

by Nicki September 2, 2010 The Liberty Zone

Do you guys know what it would take for me to say the following?

Hillary Clinton may just be the best candidate for President of the United States in the 2012 election.

It would take an administration that ran up an already high deficit to the point that it’s practically unsustainable.

It would take an administration that approaches foreign policy from a position of weakness.

And it would take an administration that continues to weaken our national sovereignty and border security in an effort to pander the fuck out of the Hispanic vote.

And since I’m fairly sure the Republicans won’t put up anyone of any quality (hell, I’m still afraid they’ll trot out Zombie McVain just to give him another shot at the brass ring, because he’s a waaaaaaaaaarrrr heeeeeeeeeeeeeroooooo), Hillary may just be the best candidate we have.

One Chicago dentist thinks so

“She has more experience working in and with the White House than most living presidents. She is one of the most admired women in our nation’s history. Let’s make sure the president we should have elected in 2008 will be on the ballot in 2012. Hillary 2012: Hillary Clinton for President. Start now. Where there’s a Hill there’s a way,” says an ad that began running on television in New Orleans Wednesday.

The commercial was paid for by a Chicago dentist named William DeJean.

When asked why he put the ad up, DeJean told CNN Thursday that “I’m a dentist and I don’t think this country is headed in the right direction.”

Granted Hillary Clinton has repeatedly said she won’t run for President in 2012, so I can grin and say I’ll support her 2012 candidacy with confidence.  But seriously…

How much worse can it really get?

Did I just say that?  Really?

*cracks head against wall*

Repeatedly.

Situational Awareness is Vital to Self Defense

by The LearnAboutGuns.com Author September 2, 2010 Learn About Guns

When it comes to self defense, I write mainly about how firearms are the most effective method of self defense yet invented by humanity.  I mention how guns allow everyone, including the elderly, the disabled, and the physically weaker members of society, to save themselves from even the strongest criminals.  However, guns alone are not enough to guarantee safety – Being aware of one’s surroundings is also vital: Read more …

Other side’s assessment of things

by Of Arms and the Law September 2, 2010 Arms & The Law

The Legal Community Against VIolence [a handful of attorneys and a big Joyce Foundation grant] has posted its annual report in pdf.

It starts with, well, that little setback in McDonald v. Chicago and Heller v. DC. (p.8 8-9), predicting it will unleash a flood of litigation from the progun side.

Their explanation of legislation they’d like to see (their hopes, not their successes) occupies 3 1/2 pages, pp. 10-14.

Their explanation of where they were defeated recently (guns in parks, guns on Amtrack, Tiahrt Amendment, DC statehood defeated over an amendment cutting back DC gun laws, State legislation including Firearm Freedom Acts (“Regrettably, many state legislatures are running amok”) and expanded “shall issue” CCW permits, runs seven pages.

Went to the range today to empty some .223 brass.  Shooting at dangling scrap wood is a hell of a lot more fun then simply punching paper. The Bateman case is a challenge to North Carolina’s statute that makes it illegal to carry a firearm off your own land during a declared emergency; defendants have moved to dismiss, as I recall. So here comes Hurricane Earl, and the governor’s declaration of a state of emergency, three days before dove season starts.

South African Shopkeeper shoots a violent armed robber in self defense

by eric-22 September 2, 2010 Self Defense Examiner

As I’ve previously noted, I mainly write about self defense cases in the United States. This is because I’m an American, who focuses first and foremost on American gun and self defense rights. However, as the case below from South Africa shows, armed self defense saves crime victims all around the world:
Police say that three armed robbers entered a Grassy Park, Cape Town shop right around closing time, and forced the owner and employees into a back room at gunpoint, while demanding money.  The owner is said to have grabbed his own gun, at which point the suspects opened…
