4th Amendment, that obsolete detail….

by Of Arms and the Law September 30, 2010 Arms & The Law

Mobile backscatter x-ray units are coming into use, to scan the inside of vehicles from a distance. I have some difficulty seeing how x-raying a vehicle is not a “search” (applying passive infrared imaging to a house has been held to be a search, and this involves active rather than passive imaging), and how doing it to every vehicle, with no reason to suspect criminality, is not “unreasonable.”

Police crack down on guns to fight crime

by David Codrea, Gun Rights Examiner September 30, 2010 Gun Rights Examiner

'[R]esidents have been ordered to present their firearms and licences to their nearest police stations in a bid by law enforcers to account for the number of guns in the city," The Herald informs us."Those with malfunctioning firearms have also been called upon to surrender the weapons," the report adds. Why?There has been "a spate of armed robberies." And as an additional crime-fighting measure, "the call was also extended to those who acquired firearms while living in other areas but were now resident in the city.""We also expect those who…

I think Mr. Obama owes me a raise. Obamacare is raising my tax burden

by One Sensible Progressive September 30, 2010 The Bluff

The negatives of the frankenstein style Obamacare bill (neither single payer universal coverage OR intelligent insurance regulation to control costs) continue to become apparent. One thing that is painfully clear is that it WILL increase the tax burden, and therefore taxes paid, on everybody whether we make $250,000 a year or not (though admittedly if the . . . → Read More: I think Mr. Obama owes me a raise. It’s official

by Nicki September 30, 2010 The Liberty Zone

Most governors suck.

Just got an email from Cato’s Chris Edwards.  The Cato Institute has released its biennial fiscal report card on the governors, which looks at the taxing and spending records of the governors since 2008, and the news is not all that fabulous.

The last couple of years have been tough on the states.  They’ve had to raise taxes, while cutting spending to match lower revenues thanks to rising unemployment and falling GDP.  It’s a sad story, but just a few governors have managed to receive an “A” on this report card.

Four governors were awarded an “A” in this report card—Mark Sanford of South Carolina, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

As for the overspending, overtaxing shitweasels?

Seven governors were awarded an “F”—Ted Kulongoski of Oregon, David Paterson of New York, Jodi Rell of Connecticut, Pat Quinn of Illinois, Jim Doyle of Wisconsin, Bill Ritter of Colorado, and Chris Gregoire of Washington.

It’s an interesting report.  I highly recommend a read.

San Diego concedes in suit over open carry

by Of Arms and the Law September 29, 2010 Arms & The Law

CalGuns Foundation happily announces that San Diego, in reparation for having arrested a person engaged in legal open carry, has agreed to clear his record and cough up $35,000. The officers didn’t know, and San Diego PD had not trained them to know, that in CA open carry of an unloaded firearm is lawful, and thought that the fact he had loaded magazines on him (lawful, too) made it a loaded gun.
