Holder Sweats As More Fast & Furious Lies Uncovered By Feb. 3rd Memo

AmmoLand Gun News

AmmoLand Gun News

Washington DC - -(Ammoland.com)- As Eric Holder’s December 8th testimony before Congress draws near, more and more lies surrounding Fast and Furious are crumbling to the ground.

From new evidence that appears to indicate that President Obama knew about the operation as early as May 2010, and that he gave directives for action against Mexican cartels a year prior (March 2009), to even newer evidence that the DOJ may have “deliberately misled” Congress via a Feb. 4th memo denying the ATF had “sanctioned’ or otherwise knowingly allowed the sale of assault weapons.”

The Feb. 4th memo was written by Assistant Attorney General Ron Weich, and it’s purpose now seems to have been simply to carry water for Holder & Co. It is countered by a newly uncovered memo by ATF Agent Gary Styer, written Feb. 3rd, which talked about how Fast and Furious pushed agents out of their comfort zone, it “divided and isolated” them, and resulted in guns being sold and/or transferred without being adequately followed and/or traced.

In other words, the promise of tracing the thousands of guns sold and then walked via Fast and Furious was a façade. Wrote Styer: “It is unheard of to have an active wiretap investigation without full time dedicated surveillance units on the ground.”

Yet like so many other agents before him, Styer says that when ATF agents complained about the way Fast and Furious was being conducted, those agents’ concerns were “widely disregarded.”

Folks, Holder’s house of cards isn’t just crumbling to the ground, rather, it’s on fire.

There is no end to the number of lies that have been told to cover up the DOJ’s knowledge of and involvement in Fast and Furious, and that means Holder must be held to answer for the crimes associated with this ludicrous operation.

The cover-ups must stop. The excuses must stop. The prosecution must begin.

The Marcellus Shale Boom & Its Side Effects

The most important effect of natural gas production in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia is simple… jobs.
By Steve Irwin

The Center For Vision & Values

The Center For Vision & Values

Grove City, PA --(Ammoland.com)- Marcellus Shale is becoming a household name, from discussions around kitchen tables to town halls with (sometimes) angry citizens.

Endless media coverage, economic analysis, geological prediction, business maneuvers and political debate encompass this complex topic.

Even the experts concede that the breadth of this issue will only be fully understood after gas production continues for many more years.

An important effect of natural gas production in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia is simple: jobs.

In contrast to America’s chronically high unemployment rate, the Marcellus-generated job activity within these regions can only be described as a gold rush. Thousands of trucks, ranging from semi-tankers to white diesel crew-cab pickups, have flooded the streets and back roads of many towns. While billions of dollars in federal spending have done little to nothing to improve jobs and infrastructure, the dollars invested into these reborn communities, once hurting by economic depression, are all thanks to subsurface layers of dirty black shale.

Infrastructure improvements and job creation are not the only byproducts of Marcellus Shale drilling. Land owners are likewise reaping tremendous benefits. Three years ago, some land leased for gas production had a market value of $10 an acre, tops. The driving market force of competition has caused that number to surge, with landowners negotiating payment terms upwards of $3,000 an acre with 15 percent or better royalty rates.

That’s cash in hand, checks in the mail, and escrow in the bank.

And still, a mere one percent of expected wells have been drilled within the Marcellus-rich region, with a potential of 200,000 wells. The full potential offers a source of American energy that is hard to estimate. The pipeline system needed to transport the hydrocarbons has only begun to be constructed, with boom-centers of crackers and compressors along the way.

This could portend an economic viability extending 100 years.

This phenomenon can be understood in very basic economic terms. The development of Marcellus Shale could only happen in America. Consider: citizens in this nation have long enjoyed not only the unique freedom to pursue happiness but the liberty to own property. Although other portions of the globe could be cashing in shale —namely China, Canada, and Europe— an individual citizen’s control of land, even to the depths of thousands of feet, is unique to the United States. Furthermore, it is only through private industry and corporations that the efficient technology of hydrofracturing is made available. Companies like Chesapeake Energy, Range Resources, Hess, BP, and Consol are all publicly traded and held liable to their creditors, and thus are making private business decisions for their own sake and profit.

Of course, also part of the American phenomenon is the government’s regulatory role, which plays a crucial role in Marcellus development —or the lack thereof. Look no further than the state of New York, where a moratorium on natural gas exploration has capped economic activity. Yet, gas producers remain cautiously optimistic. If Governor Rendell were still in office, things might look different. For the time being, Republican Governor Tom Corbett has only proposed an impact fee on natural gas production, of which the tax portion is not expected to survive state legislation. Maybe Governors

John Kasich and Earl Ray Tomblin in bordering Ohio and West Virginia will take note.

Exploration and production of Marcellus Shale is certainly a sign of the times in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, exhibited by the boom towns that have been revived from drilling activity. These times are producing the creation of real jobs and money infused into local communities, and this is just the start. No doubt, Marcellus drilling also provides distinct challenges, which are being hotly debated, and which indeed need to be carefully considered.

For now, though, the economic benefits in these dire economic times are undeniable.

Tactical Training Tips – Key Points for Instructors & Shooters

Tactical Training Tips – Key Points for Instructors & Shooters
By Jeffrey Denning

Tactical Tips To Law Enforcement Training Instructors.

Tactical Tips To Law Enforcement Training Instructors.

Action Target

Provo, Utah --(Ammoland.com)- Action Target hosted their 20th Law Enforcement Training Camp earlier this year.

While pondering some of the unfortunate recent tragedies that have struck the law enforcement community nationwide —including a higher percentage of lethal attacks against police officers as well as the accidental shooting death of a 24-year-old corrections officer I thought I’d offer some tactical tips to law enforcement training instructors.

Now, although this piece mentions officers and may be geared towards law enforcement in general, all the points can most definitely apply to the tactical shooting community as a whole.

Here’s my advice:
Repetition is the law of learning. The more students accurately perform a variety of techniques, the more comfortable they will become. Tactical training drills allow officers to develop individual skill and assist in building muscle memory.

Muscle memory is a kinesthetic phenomenon whereby specific muscular patterns and movements become ingrained. When movements are repeated over and over, eventually these movements can be performed without conscious effort.

Under such extreme stress, cognitive ability is diminished and thought process is narrowed acutely. When facing the stress of lethal confrontation, officers should not have to think about basic weapons manipulation or marksmanship fundamentals; if they have to think about these basic fundamentals under stress, their chances for losing increase.

On the other hand, regular practice and difficult, realistic, and challenging drills will increase survivability. Repetitive training, therefore, is vitally important when considering survival and life-saving tactical techniques.

As with any type of improvement, officers can never increase their ability unless they fail on occasion. No person can develop unless they try something new and push themselves to the limits. Failure or imperfection on a specific technique or drill is likely to occur. The idea is to have officers meet successes. Small improvements provide satisfaction which, in turn, buoys individual esteem and maintains interest and encourages persistence.

As a training instructor, here are some of the key points to remember during every range training opportunity or any tactical firearms training period.

1) Individuals that are considered “experts” in their chosen field are extremely good at the fundamentals. Focusing on the basics is a positive thing. On occasion, give students something fun too. No one wants to be bored at the range.

2) When training, it is important to remember the end goal: preparing for lethal confrontations. In order to maximize training, (a) the individual shooter should envision that each and every shot during the tactical evolution is, in reality, a lethal force situation; and (b) trainers should mimic real world events. For instance, in my last custom tailored Patrol Rifle Course, I had police officers wear the same Active Shooter go-bag that they carry in their squad cars. I had them reload from that pouch. The feedback was positive, mostly because the training mimicked real circumstances. In short, train as you fight. Don’t say, “In reality we’d do this but we’re not going to train like that.” That’s cheating yourself and your team of valuable training! Cheating or foregoing reality will get someone hurt or killed in the long run.

3) Give students several tools to fill up their tactical toolbox, but focus on what will work best. Remember, it’s not a good tactic if it doesn’t work well (a) on the move, (b) in low-light, or (c) under stress.

4) Start out slowly. Speed will come in time. Or, perhaps once you’ve done some drills at full speed, slow down to quarter or half speed until techniques are perfected, then speed back up.

5) Weapons handling skills can increase dramatically without ever shooting a single round. Dry and/or dummy round training periods are extremely helpful and are all too often overlooked. The nice thing about that is the price is right. With the budget crunch, remember, weapons handling skills doesn’t mean you have to shoot a lot of rounds. In fact, dummy rounds work wonders.

6) Firearms are inherently dangerous. Safety briefings and safety are occasionally thought of as the same thing; we’ve said it and we’ve heard it said a thousand times. Unfortunately, it’s under that premise when accidents happen. Don’t think it will never happen here. Creating an atmosphere where everyone’s comfortable enough to say, “Watch your muzzle” or “Get your finger off the trigger,” is essential. No egos among the instructors or the students. Remember, always keep safety first.

Use these tips for a safer, and more effective, training environment and continue to hone your skills and keep adding to your tactical toolbox.

Maximum Warrior

Maximum Warrior

LOS ANGELES --(Ammoland.com)- Maximum Warrior is a one-of-a-kind competition that tests 20 contestants in 15 action-packed, adrenaline-filled challenges.

Presented by MAXIM, in partnership with the Jeep Brand, Maximum Warrior just released its 10th webisode: GATE TO GATE.

Only two warriors remained in the competition at the beginning of this challenge and by the end, U.S. Air Force Pararescueman Luke D. was crowned the 2011 Maximum Warrior.

For the final challenge, the Warriors navigated through eight target areas, beginning on the ground level of a five-floor sniper tower at the T1G military training facility. They had to run to the top of the tower, engage targets in the distance, and then run back down to the next target area. The second component of the challenge was to hit various targets on foot downrange. After completed, the Warriors ran up a berm to get to the next station where they needed to assemble an AK-47and engage multiple targets. They then used a Jeep Wrangler to assist in climbing a wall, and once over had to drag an injured rescue subject (180 lb dummy) to safety.

The Warriors were then given a short amount of time to eliminate enemy targets before they disappeared. Next, the Warriors ran to a shooting range where they needed to assemble six weapons (four pistols, one rifle, and one shotgun) and hit targets in the shooting stalls. After they finished that task, they ran into the multi-room facility where they had to scour the building, distinguish between threats and non-threats, and engage all enemy targets. The final aspect of the challenge was to drive a Jeep Wrangler through the Wadi course. Time and accuracy were both used to create an adjusted time for the Warriors.

The Warrior with the best adjusted time was U.S. Air Force 48th Rescue Squadron Pararescueman Luke D., making him the 2011 Maximum Warrior and owner of a brand new, 2012 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: MW3 Edition.

“It felt good to win knowing I was representing not only myself, but my family and the Pararescue career field,” said Luke D.

“My wife told me I was going to win before I ever left for the competition and she was really excited when she found out the results. Also, it’s not every day that you win a prize like a brand new Jeep Wrangler, so that is a blessing financially to our family.” Impressed with the nine other military competitors in the Maximum Warrior competition, Luke admitted he knew he was in for a tough journey.

Maximum Warrior Challenges:
All 15 challenges in the 2011 Maximum Warrior series were designed to utilize the skills that U.S. armed servicemen and women need to employ on a regular basis – rapid and critical thinking, decisive judgment, excellent marksmanship and much more. Challenge 10 required the two remaining warriors, Luke D. and Drew P. to move through multiple difficult and detail-oriented tasks quickly and adeptly. In the weeks ahead, Maximum Warrior fans can see every day, non-military guys competing with the 10 Maximum Warrior competitors in five additional challenge webisodes.

U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Airgun

USA Shooting

USA Shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- The journey toward the London 2012 Olympic Games continues as aspiring Olympians take the stage in the first part of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Airgun in Anniston, Ala.

The event takes place from Dec. 2-4 at the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) South Marksmanship Center.

Robert Mitchell, Executive Director of USA Shooting praised the CMP South facility and expressed USAS’ excitement for hosting as he said, “The CMP venue is the best airgun range in the country with 80 electronic targets that provides our athletes with an ideal shooting environment.”

At the completion of the 2010 and 2011 World Cup seasons, the USA Shooting Team won two Women’s 10m Air Rifle quotas, two Men’s 10m Air Rifle quotas and two Men’s 10m Air Pistol quotas. These valuable quotas determine the number of athletes that will represent the USA in the 2012 Olympic Games. The scores from the first part will be combined with those of the second part, which will be held the CMP’s North Marksmanship Center in Camp Perry, Ohio from Feb. 22-25. Olympic Team selection will be based on the aggregate of four courses of fire and two best finals.

In Men’s 10m Air Rifle, top-ranked athletes Corporal Matt Rawlings (Wharton, Texas) of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) and Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) are expected to deliver strong performances. Rawlings was the recent gold medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games, winner of the first quota at the 2010 Championship of the Americans and the reigning National Champion. Hall is hot on his heels as he secured the second quota at the 2011 Pan American Games with a silver medal and the bronze medal at the 2011 National Championships. Two-time Olympian Matt Emmons (Browns Mill, N.J.) is looking for his second berth on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. Emmons received an Olympic nomination (pending approval by the USOC) for his success in Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position and looks to demonstrate his airgun talents as well.

Women’s 10m Air Rifle will be an interesting event as no clear champions have emerged in the past two seasons of competition. Meghann K. Morrill (Boerne, Texas) made the final in last year’s World Championships and is the reigning National Champion, but didn’t medal in a World Cup this year. The only Women’s 10m Air Rifle World Cup medalist in 2011 was Sarah Scherer (Woburn, Mass.) with a gold medal (and quota) winning performance in Changwon. Scherer’s collegiate teammate Sarah Beard (Danville, Ind.) is also on the radar as she delivered an exceptional performance for the silver medal at the 2011 National Championship. Two-time Olympian Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.) is also a strong contender. Coming off a recent gold medal (and quota) performance at the Pan American Games, Caruso’s shooting is peaking at the right time in the season. Another name that’s liable to show up in the finals is Jamie Gray (Lebanon, Pa.). Gray, formerly Jamie Beyerle, like Emmons has already received an Olympic nomination (pending approval by the USOC) in Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position, but is looking to assert herself in airgun competition. With two spots available for the female competitors and the top talent on the line, it is likely that the athletes who reach the podium will be separated by just tenths of a point.

Sergeant First Class Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.) of the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) is ready and waiting for Men’s 10m Air Pistol. Szarenski has had a stellar two years leading up to the Olympic Games. In the 2010 and 2011 season, he’s won six international medals in pistol events (including Men’s 50m Free Pistol). Szarenski is also the Pan American Games gold medalist-winning the second Men’s 10m Air Pistol quota for the American team in Guadalajara, Mexico. Brian Beaman is also on the radar as he (Selby, S.D.) won the bronze medal at the 2011 World Cup USA and first Men’s 10m Air Pistol quota. Not to be overlooked is young Will Brown (Twins Falls, Ida.), a Resident Athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Brown has dominated junior competitions for the past few years and has been making the leap into the men’s division. He recently finished fifth at the 2011 Pan American Games. Though he may be considered more of a wild card, 2008 Olympian Sergeant First Class Keith Sanderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), also of the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program, made his debut in air pistol at the 2010 Winter Airgun Championships and his scores have been rapidly improving.

Spectators are welcome to attend and cheer on future Olympians. For live results and more information on the CMP South Marksmanship Center, please visit the CMP website. For updates and daily recaps, please visit www.usashooting.org.

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Supports Extended Wolf Hunt in Montana

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Supports Extended Wolf Hunt in Montana

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

MISSOULA, Mont. --(Ammoland.com)- The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is on record supporting a proposal to extend wolf-hunting seasons in Montana through the end of 2011, and beyond if necessary, until the harvest quota is met.

In a Nov. 28, 2011, letter to the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department, RMEF President and CEO David Allen wrote, “RMEF believes that it is very important that hunters be allowed as much time as possible during these winter months to harvest the statewide quota of 220 wolves.”

Allen reminded the agency that elk and other big game herds in certain areas are being significantly impacted by burgeoning wolf populations, along with black bears, grizzlies and mountain lions. RMEF encouraged state officials to actively manage and control predators in these areas.

RMEF also suggested reviewing “means of take” regulations to maximize opportunities for hunters to meet harvest quotas.

“It is very unlikely that sport hunting will provide adequate control of wolf populations going forward. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the public should prepare for more aggressive wolf control methods, perhaps as early as summer 2012,” added Allen.

About the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation:
RMEF is leading a conservation initiative that has protected or enhanced habitat on over 6 million acres–an area larger than Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain and Great Smoky Mountains national parks combined. RMEF also is a strong voice for hunters in access, wildlife management and conservation policy issues. RMEF members, partners and volunteers, working together as Team Elk, are making a difference all across elk country. Join us at www.rmef.org or 800-CALL ELK.

A Wild Snake Hunt or More Animal Rights Oppression

U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance

U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance

Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- From a group that’s well known for filing lawsuits comes another stunt to grab attention—and possibly cause other serious long-term problems.

The Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) is offering a $500 reward for anyone who documents the existence of the South Florida rainbow snake.

Just last month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared the snake extinct. The CBD is now claiming that the snake may still exist. The group wants to find evidence of the snake and have it listed under the Endangered Species Act.

In case you are wondering how this might affect hunting, trapping, and fishing, having the snake listed as an endangered species instead of extinct could possibly allow the CBD to go to court and ask for severe restrictions on things like recreation and development in areas where the snake might be found. One extreme result could be bans on hunting, fishing, and trapping or closures for sportsmen’s access in these areas.

Similar closings of vast areas of land occurred when an ivory-billed woodpecker —another critically endangered or possibly extinct species— was reportedly found in Arkansas a few years back.

The South Florida rainbow snake was one of the more than 300 species that the CBD wants protected under federal programs.

These large, rampant CBD petitions waste large sums of taxpayer dollars and cause great drains on USFWS manpower and resources.

Full details on the CBD snake promotion are at http://tiny.cc/0jag7

National Wild Turkey Federation Outdoor Event for Women – Cabela’s in Berks County PA

National Wild Turkey Federation

National Wild Turkey Federation

EDGEFIELD, S.C. --(Ammoland.com)- The Blue Mountain chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will host a Women in the Outdoors event on March 10, 2012 at Cabela’s in Hamburg, PA.

Pre-registration is required for this event. Registration can be done by going to www.womenintheoutdoors.org, and then clicking on “PA WITO Event Manager Calendar” and then searching the calendar.

A beneficial partnership between the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Pennsylvania Game Commission helps provide outdoor opportunities such as this to women in the Keystone State. The Pennsylvania Game Commission recognizes a high interest level in the outdoors among women in the state and wants to provide more opportunities to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle.

Since 1998, the NWTF’s Women in the Outdoors program has organized events designed especially for women. By providing expert instruction and hands-on education, the NWTF helps members develop outdoor skills and emphasizes the importance of wildlife management and the role of hunters in conservation.

“Our program is about encouraging women to try new outdoor activities in a safe environment that makes them feel at ease,” said Brenda Valentine, NWTF Spokeswoman, First Lady of Hunting and host of the NWTF’s “Turkey Call” TV show airing on Pursuit Channel, and Bass Pro Shops’ “Real Hunting” TV show.

“This event is also an opportunity for women of all walks of life – singles, moms, daughters, young and old – to spend a day outdoors, away from home, having fun and making new friends.”

The combination of sponsorship, such as the Game Commission and local chapter support, allows the NWTF to offer these programs at a low cost to participants. The cost of attending each event includes a subscription to Turkey Country, the NWTF’s full-color publication. Turkey County includes stories about the Women in the Outdoors, JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship), Wheelin’ Sportsmen, NWTF outreach programs, conservation issues, turkey calling and hunting, education programs and much more.

“The Women in the Outdoors program allows the NWTF to reach an entirely new audience, one that has the potential to benefit conservation efforts,” Valentine said. “It’s an opportunity for women to find great satisfaction and enjoyment in the outdoors.”

Anti-Gun Brady Bunch Sherriff Arrested for Dealing Meth

You know what they say about absolute power corrupting absolutely…

Anti-Gun Brady Bunch Sheriff Pat Sullivan

Former Sheriff Pat Sullivan, here giving cover to fellow gun control advocate, was arrested for using drugs to solicit a male prostitute.

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Colorado --(Ammoland.com)- One of the reasons I am so opposed to the government being involved in your Second Amendment rights is that it takes the power away from you and puts it in their hands.

In the hands of people like the former Republican Sheriff of Arapahoe County, Patrick Sullivan.

Sullivan made a habit of helping out groups like the Brady Campaign when it came to preventing law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights.

He even testified before Congress for Handgun Control in favor of the Brady bill, and in the State Capitol against any concealed carry reform.

During his 18-year tenure as Arapahoe County Sheriff, Sullivan was a poster boy for big government and was bestowed the title of national “Sheriff of the Year” in 2001 for his efforts at infringing your rights – even at a national level.

Whenever she needed him, Sarah Brady trotted out Sheriff Sullivan as a token Republican who wanted to impose gun control on America — and it worked.

Our nation still lives under the insidious scheme of the Brady Act (which, incidentally, violates the Constitutional prohibition of infringing on the right to keep and bear arms).

Sheriff Sullivan was also famous for trying to buy off local gun rights activists with a “buddy” concealed carry permit (when permits were almost impossible to acquire).

In 1995 Sullivan offered me a permit, attempting to buy my inactivity in the battle for concealed carry in Colorado. It didn’t work. I literally told Sheriff Sullivan where to stick his permit, and continued to work to change Colorado’s law.

On Tuesday Sullivan was arrested for dealing meth to a man for… Well, let’s just say it was for things I would rather not repeat.

That’s right; a power-hungry sheriff intent on taking your freedoms turned out to be a drug-dealing, male prostitute-seeker.

Former Sheriff Sullivan is now sitting in the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility. That’s right. He’s sitting in the jail named for his honor.

And this is the kind of person the Brady Campaign champions and uses to testify as an “expert”? I would like to tell you that I’m shocked, but you’re smart enough to know better. This is why I am always skeptical of any politician who seeks more control, not less. They are out for personal gain and they will get it at your expense.

In the case of Sheriff Sullivan, I can personally say I’ve witnessed him trampling on your rights for years. Sheriff Sullivan was one of the main obstacles to passing concealed carry in Colorado. Yet apparently the anti-gun crowd thinks men like this should set a standard for who can own a gun and who can’t.

While this may be dismissed by some as just another corrupt cop, the fact is that he has been personally involved in the fight against your Second Amendment rights. And he was successful at it.

It’s pure travesty of justice that a man like Sullivan could be given such authority to prevent you from your own rights, but without standing up to power, it’s like I said at the beginning – it corrupts.

I make it my pledge to you, the gun owner, to stand up against jack-booted thugs like Patrick Sullivan at every turn, regardless of position or party affiliation.

Are you with me?

For freedom,

Dudley Brown
Executive Director

Goat Tuff’s Equalizer Release Aid Creates Quite A Stir

Goat Tuff’s Equalizer Release Aid

Goat Tuff’s Equalizer Release Aid

Goat Tuff

Goat Tuff

Tucson, AZ --(Ammoland.com)- Goat Tuff’s Equalizer Release Aid created quite a stir when it was released to the public in 2011.

And of course it would as it was the first and only release aid that helped archers increase arrow speed without increasing draw weight.

It was designed originally for short draw archers and those archers who, due to age or injury, had to shoot less poundage thereby compromising performance. It works because the archer can increase draw length from 1 to 3”.

Tests showed, on average, archers gained 10 fps for each 1” increase in draw length.

Well the word got out and more an more standard archers wanted the Equalizer because they were also able to increase arrow speed without having to increase poundage.

For 2012 Goat Tuff’s Ric Clark made more improvements to the Equalizer. These are attached and I hope you will share this with your audience. Visit: www.goattuffproducts.com

New Jersey Court Ruling Clears Way for Bear Season

Black Bears

Bear Hunt Needed In New Jersey

New Jersey Fish and Game

New Jersey Fish and Game

Trenton, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- A state court has upheld the validity of the state’s Comprehensive Black Bear Management Policy (CBBMP).

The ruling today by the Appellate Division of state Superior Court clears the way for the week-long bear hunt starting on Monday, Dec. 5.

The three-judge panel rejected arguments made by the New Jersey Animal Protection League and the Bear Education and Resource Group contending the DEP and State Fish and Game Council acted arbitrarily and/or in bad faith in creating the CBBMP, which includes an annual bear hunt as part of the integrated plan to deal with the state’s black bear population.

The bear hunt will run through Saturday, Dec. 10, to be held concurrently with the Six-day Firearm Deer Season. Bear hunting zones include large sections of Morris, Sussex, Warren, and northern Passaic counties, plus smaller areas of Hunterdon, Somerset and Bergen counties. There is a limit of one bear per licensed and registered hunter.

NJ Bear Hunt Is On – Court Agrees With Scientific Bear Management Policy

State Appeals Court Dismisses Challenge To DEP’s Comprehensive Black Bear Management Policy

New Jersey Outdoor Alliance

New Jersey Outdoor Alliance

TRENTON, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin today said he was pleased by a state court ruling that upheld the validity of the state’s Comprehensive Black Bear Management Policy (CBBMP).

The ruling today by the Appellate Division of state Superior Court clears the way for a week-long bear hunt that will take place in northwestern New Jersey starting on Monday, Dec. 5.

“This ruling affirms the science- and fact- based policy that we have adopted as part of a comprehensive approach to managing black bears in New Jersey,” said Commissioner Bob Martin. “The plan is a legitimate response to deal with a large black bear population and a resultant increase in public complaints about bear and human encounters. This is a public safety issue that requires responsible action by the state.”

10, to be held concurrently with the state’s six-day firearm deer hunting season. Bear hunting zones include large sections of Morris, Sussex, Warren, and northern Passaic counties, plus smaller areas of Hunterdon, Somerset and Bergen counties. There is a limit of one bear per licensed and registered hunter.

Population estimates show there are some 3,400 black bears in a 1,000 square-mile hunting area north of Route 78 and west of Route 287, with the population highest in the northwest corner of the state, which has one of the highest black bear densities in the nation. There also are a smaller but uncounted number of bears in the rest of New Jersey’s 21 counties, with reports of bear sightings occurring in the past few years in more eastern and central portions of the state.

The DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife is seeking to stabilize and reduce the state’s black bear population, to eventually be maintained at a density that minimizes human/bear conflicts, provides for a sustainable population within suitable bear habitat, and minimizes movement of bears to unsuitable habitat in suburban and urban areas.

“We have a duty to responsibly manage wildlife populations in our state,” said Commissioner Martin. “There are a large number of black bears in New Jersey, especially in the north, which have resulted in too many bear and human encounters, more property damage, and subsequent public complaints.”

“Hunting is just one facet of our comprehensive black bear policy, and one used successfully by other states,” added Commissioner Martin. “It is important to understand that we are diligently working on many other measures designed to maintain a healthy black bear population while reducing public safety concerns.”

The CBBMP, approved in 2010, offers a common sense mix of bear management tools, including education, research, bear habitat analysis and protection, non-lethal bear management techniques and enhanced efforts to keep human food sources, especially household trash, away from bears to limit bear-human encounters. Those efforts in 2011 included the following:

  • Information: Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Information and Education distributed 11,000 Know the Bear Facts brochures, 8,000 Know the Bear Facts Kids Activity Guides, 1,240 DVD copies of the “Living with NJ Black Bears” documentary film, and 64 “Understanding Black Bears” K-8 teacher classroom curriculum kits.
  • Education: Fish and Wildlife continues an aggressive bear education outreach program, targeting police agencies, towns, schools, libraries, nature centers, and campgrounds. So far in 2011, DEP wildlife biologists have offered 87 black bear education programs and exhibits that were attended by 10,385 residents and officials in 16 counties.
  • Trash Management: Printed materials, school curriculums, community education programs, the DEP web site, and DEP field agents are being employed to try and ensure that human food sources, especially garbage, do not unintentionally become a food source for bears. Efforts also are being made to encourage retailers to sell bear-resistant trash containers and to educate trash haulers on this issue.
  • Research: Fish and Wildlife biologists captured, tagged and scientifically examined 234 bears in 2011; installed GPS radio-telemetry collars on bears captured in urban areas to monitor habitat use, movements and travel corridors; gathered extensive data on 592 bears harvested in the 2010 bear hunt; and partnered with East Stroudsburg University to study ticks carried by bears and possible transmission to humans.
  • Local Partnerships: 32 police officers enrolled in DEP’s black bear response training program in 2011, bringing the total of trained officers statewide to 1,039.

“We are fully committed to this comprehensive black bear management effort, which not only protects the public but also safeguards our black bear population,” said Dave Chanda, Director of the Division of Fish and Wildlife. “That includes a continuing need to educate people who live in bear country or enjoy recreational opportunities in bear habitat areas on methods they can employ to limit the potential for negative interactions with black bears.”

More than 6,400 bear permits have been issued so far in 2011. DEP biologists predict a harvest similar to 2010, when more than 7,000 permits were issued and 592 bears were harvested.

About 20 percent of harvested bears in 2010 were considered nuisance bears, causing property damage and/or involved in bear-human incidents. The result was a 4 percent decrease in total bear complaint calls to DEP, with damage and nuisance calls down 13 percent, and Category One calls (dangerous bear incidents) down 16 percent.

Texas Feral Hog Public Hunting Opportunities

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department

AUSTIN, Texas --(Ammoland.com)- According to survey results compiled by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service 74% of Texas’ 254 counties contain feral hog populations and there is a good chance Texas Parks & Wildlife Department offers feral hog hunting opportunities in those counties on almost 1 million acres of Public Hunting Lands scattered across the state.

Right now is as good a time as any to hit the woods feral hog hunting. Given the drought conditions across the state hunters can anticipate feral hogs being around whatever water sources are available, especially with acorn-producing trees nearby.

In East Texas there are several Wildlife Management Areas that offer year-round hog hunting, but staff recommends keying in on those areas associated with rivers such as Alabama Creek, Alazan Bayou, Angelina Neches/Dam B, North Toledo Bend, and Blue Elbow Swamp Wildlife Management Areas.

With the purchase of a hunting license and a $48 Annual Public Hunting Permit hunters will be mailed a publication that includes maps, legal game box descriptions, and means and methods of hunting for each and every Wildlife Management Area, Public Hunting Land, State Park, etc…available in our Public Hunting Program.

Additionally, folks can digitally-scout these areas before heading down the highway by visiting http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/lands/maps/

The Mission of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, (TPWD), is to manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Visit: www.tpwd.state.tx.us

Remembering Buddy the Lab – One Year Later

By Tori McCormick

Buddy One Year Later

Remembering Buddy the Lab - One Year Later

Delta Waterfowl

Delta Waterfowl

Bismarck, ND --(Ammoland.com)- He died on a Wednesday at 8:47 a.m.

I hustled Buddy’s 68 pounds from my truck’s passenger seat into the vet’s office and laid him on the stainless steel table, his aged and atrophied body on full display.

I can still feel him cradled in my arms, how his dead weight felt heavier than I expected.

He could no longer walk or control any of his bodily functions. His breathing was sporadic and labored. For each breath, his diaphragm would hit bottom with a muffled thud and contract ever so slightly. He moaned with each exhale, like he had repeatedly the night before.

“He won’t feel a thing,” said the veterinarian. “He’ll drift off like he’s going to sleep. He won’t feel a thing.”

As Buddy lay on the table, I looked into his eyes, his cold nose pressed against my own. Buddy had that unmistakable 10,000-mile stare, the kind soldiers get when they’ve seen too much combat. Buddy’s eyes were glossy and lifeless and resigned. The cancer, diagnosed only two short weeks before, was, little by little, stealing him from me.

The vet inserted the needle into his right leg. Buddy did not flinch. He just stared into my eyes, existing, as he was, in that borderland between life and death.

“It won’t be long now,” said the vet, his stethoscope listening to Buddy’s waning heartbeat. “It won’t be long.”

When Buddy was eight months old, he made his first retrieve. It was a dandy, though not by design. I was hunting the flood plain of the James River, near Aberdeen, South Dakota. The river’s main stem was a watery tempest, swollen and roiling, deep and dangerous. The shallow, docile water that spilled over its banks created perfect waterfowl habitat, and the blue-winged teal that took refuge there were as thick as summertime mosquitoes.

I had Buddy on a check chord, staked into the muddy ground behind my makeshift blind. I wanted him to observe, absorb and learn.

The morning was shaping up nicely. I killed two drake blue-wings right away, and retrieved them myself as Buddy looked on from behind the blind. He marked both birds, and his quivering body language (and occasional whimpering) suggested he didn’t much like or appreciate being corkscrewed into the ground.

Buddy had freedom on his mind.

After I retrieved the second bird, a lone Canada goose glided silently into shooting range. I didn’t see the bird right away, but Buddy did. He sat statuesque in the blind, his head swiveling slightly as he tracked the birds’ flight path, his tail, like a windshield wiper, fanning the muddy ground.

When I shouldered my shotgun the bird was already behind the blind and heading toward the river. The smart move, in hindsight, would have been to pass on the shot. I didn’t. Instead, as if driven by Pavlovian instinct, I snapped off a round and winged the bird.

A sick feeling instantly came over me: The birds’ downward trajectory suggested it would land in the pulsing river, and it did.

It did with an echoing splash that seemed to distill all of Buddy’s disparate thoughts into a singular motivation: retrieving that lone, winged Canada goose.

In a fit of puppy pique, Buddy rocketed from the blind, pulled up the stake from the muddy ground, and was off, the check chord and stake bouncing wildly behind him like beer cans dangling from a wedding-day car.

Freedom sometimes has its price, and I was instantly worried the river’s mercurial current would swallow him whole.

A British Labrador, Buddy was smaller and less overtly high strung compared to most American-bred Labs. Still, his passion for retrieving (dummies all, at least until this day) could not be satiated. When a bird was down, he always summoned the inner drive to do what he was bred —and loved— to do.

Buddy dove into the river and, seemingly in seconds, had the withering Canada goose in his mouth. He swam with a cocksureness and athleticism that I’ll never forget.

Buddy ambled up the modest river bank with ease, his glossy black coat and rippled muscles glistening in the morning sun. He never once dropped the big bird, the size of which blotted him (head and body) out completely. It was a sight to see.

Seconds later, Buddy dropped the bird near the blind. It would have been perfect had he delivered it to hand like he had been taught. Still, perfection has many incarnations, and Buddy’s retrieve was perfection enough for me. And him too, I dare say.

It cost me $130 dollars to kill my dog, to have him interred into ash, to act as God’s proxy. For genuine dog lovers, there is no preparation for such trauma.

It’s hard to love so deeply, to care so much, but even harder to let go. A year after his death, the vestiges of Buddy’s life still surround my own. Many haunt me.

I cleaned out the bed of my truck the other day and found Buddy everywhere.

  • The black and gray hair.
  • His old throw-dummies.
  • A muddy paw print.
  • A half-empty carton of his favorite liver snacks.
  • His dog dishes.
  • The old check cord and stake.

Sometimes a storm grows inside me when I think of Buddy. It’s an emotion without a name. My mind can wonder from our countless good times together and, in a flash, be trumped by the events leading up to his death. It’s difficult to reconcile.

I know now what I wish I had known then: that I should have had him put him to sleep a day earlier, sparing him a night of immeasurable pain and suffering.

My best friend, a very smart girl, has told me on occasion that I have to let go and be thankful for the joyous life we lived together. She is right, of course. But how?

As Buddy lay on that stainless steel table; as we looked into each other’s eyes, his cold nose pressed against my own, I asked my dying Lab for forgiveness.

In that moment, he did for me what he knew I could not do for myself.

Charles Daly & Cd Defense Gun Lines Return To American Marketplace

Charles Daly & Cd Defense Gun Lines Return To American Marketplace

CD Defense

CD Defense

HARRISBURG, PA --(Ammoland.com)- After a two-year absence, the Charles Daly brand and its tactical subsidiary, CD Defense, have re-entered the American marketplace, with distribution by Trans World Arms LLC of Harrisburg, PA.

TWA President Michael Kassnar said the CD Defense product line will include six modern sporting rifle and carbine models, a trio of new shotguns and several handguns, including three all-steel models and six pistols with polymer frames in two versions, a full-size and a compact in 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP.

“We’re really excited about serving American shooters once again with quality firearms under the Charles Daly and CD Defense brands,” Kassnar said. “Shooters familiar with these firearms lines can rest assured that they are as rugged and reliable as ever.”

Of particular interest is a new shotgun entry in the home defense arena, the 12-gauge iTAC tactical shotgun with an inertia-driven action and rotating bolt design, synthetic pistol grip stock, ghost ring sight and Picatinny rail. Kassnar said it is chambered for 3-inch magnums, has an 18.5-inch barrel and durable matte finish.

The other two CD Defense models are both pump-action shotguns, chambered for 12-gauge, 3-inch magnums.

TWA acquired the license to market under the Charles Daly and CD Defense trademarks, enabling the company to re-introduce the Charles Daly and bring back the CD Defense line.

“We will be exhibiting at the 2012 SHOT Show in Las Vegas,” Kassnar confirmed, “so retailers can examine the entire CD Defense line.” The new website at www.TransWorldArms.com will launch just prior to the show.

Outdoor Industry Brings ‘A’ Game to Outdoor Retailer Winter Market

Brands plan to ‘wow’ retailers with expanded product categories, new technology and a better brand experience.

Outdoor Industry Association

Outdoor Industry Association

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. --(Ammoland.com)- Although still six weeks away, Outdoor Retailer Winter Market’s more than 100 new exhibitors and nearly 900 returning exhibitors, are preparing for the industry’s leading business-to-business wintersports event bringing more extensive product categories, new technology and a better attendee experience.

Building on back-to-back record breaking show footprint*, the footprint for Winter Market has already eclipsed last year’s total by more than 25,000 net-sold square feet. The expanded show floor will be busy with an expected 7,000 retail attendees.
OR Winter Market

“While retailers are in the throes of early season sales and a very busy holiday season, outdoor brands are pulling together their newest technology, best products and most compelling sales programs to introduce at Outdoor Retailer,” said Kenji Haroutunian, Outdoor Retailer show director. “Kicking off the New Year at Outdoor Retailer is a great opportunity to absorb ‘big picture’ product trends, gain industry intelligence and recharge professional connections. We’re looking forward to another awesome show.”

Retailers looking to get their hands on the latest wintersports gear at the All Mountain Demo will be thrilled by the world class conditions at Solitude Mountain Resort and the latest gear from more than 40 elite wintersports brands.

Salomon will be making the most of its time with dealers, outfitting demo attendees with a new backcountry binding mounted on a updated version of its most popular all mountain ski.

“Historically OR is not an alpine hardgoods show for us, rather, for unveiling our newest innovation in backcountry skiing products. This year, however, OR is that perfect place,” said Salomon Alpine Brand Manager Jenny Naftulin. “In addition to what we will show at the on-snow demo, we’ve significantly added on to our booth indoors to include a showcase area for the new bindings, alpine boots, helmet line and a new women’s powder ski.”

Ongoing advances in eco-minded technology means retailers will see a wider range of product offerings from distributor, Liberty Mountain. Four hundred square feet of the company’s recently expanded booth will be dedicated to representing new eco-minded sleeping bags, backpacks and more from Vaude .

Additional space also proves valuable for brands interested in providing a very specific brand experience and merchandising ideas for retailers. The expanded Smartwool booth will include a new lounge area, a wall made from Colorado beetle-kill trees with green glass embedded throughout, a “tufted” fabric wall made from Merino wool and a gallery-style garment display to help colors and patterns stand out from the crowd.

“At the heart of our brand is this joyfulness that can be found when friends gather together outside and create memories. The additional space helps bring the brand personality to life and lets each of our product categories shine,” said Jennifer Wilkinson, Smartwool global visual marketing specialist.

These exhibiting brands join a long line of core outdoor manufacturers who are exhibiting at the All Mountain Demo and Outdoor Retailer Winter Market. The extensive list of exhibiting brands is available here.

For more information on how to participate as an exhibitor, contact Outdoor Retailer Sales Manager Marisa Nicholson at marisa.nicholson@nielsen.com or 949-226-5760. Retailers and trade members of the outdoor industry interested in registering for Winter Market can review registration requirements here.

* Net-sold square feet for Winter Market 2011 was 351,251. This number represents the highest net-sold, square feet for Winter Market since its inception in 1989.

Bear Hunt Needed In New Jersey

Black Bears

Bear Hunt Needed In New Jersey

New Jersey Outdoor Alliance

New Jersey Outdoor Alliance

TRENTON, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- New Jersey knows bears better than Goldilocks.

We’ve compiled so many scientific reports on them, we’ve probably had to shake a few out of trees so we could cut down the lumber to make the paper.

We’ve had bear policy debates, bear public hearings, bear protests and bear call-in radio segments. We’ve shot bears, run over bears, chased bears, tranquilized bears and tagged bears. Lawyers have argued about bears in front of the state Supreme Court.

Heck, there hasn’t been this much angst over misbehaving bears since Jim McMahon and “Refrigerator” Perry.

And after all this bear back-and-forth, the state last year crafted a Comprehensive Black Bear Management Policy to deal with the growing bear population. Along with educating the public against leaving six-foot Italian subs or tasty poodles on their decks, the plan calls for a hunt whenever there are too many bears wandering into too many backyards and confronting us — as they are now.

Bear lovers insist the hunt is an excuse for testosterone-drunk hunters to drag home trophies. But New Jersey is hardly bear-shooting crazy. This year’s hunt, scheduled to start Monday, will mark the first time in 40 years the state is holding black bear hunts in consecutive years. Last year, 600 bears were killed during the hunt. It barely dented the population.

But, as usual, game officials and activists can’t agree. Officials say it’s a bull market for bears — that Yogi is growing in numbers, and getting more dangerous and reckless when confronting humans. Activists, however, say statisticians are making a boo-boo. They insist bears aren’t more of a problem; the public is more diligent about reporting incidents.

A group, which has filed a lawsuit to stop the hunt, made its arguments before the judges yesterday, and the appellate court is expected to rule before the first shot.

Jeff Tittel, of the Sierra Club, says we should embrace bears, not hunt them — because they prove the state “hasn’t been paved over with subdivisions and strip malls.” So, we should celebrate coyotes, mosquitoes and poison ivy, too?

If there is going to be a hunt, Tittel says nuisance bears on the fringes of neighborhoods should be the targets. After all, they’re the ones using our trash cans as buffet tables. It makes sense, but hunting on the outskirts of town might be risky.

Until bears wear condoms and stay in the woods, we’ll need an occasional hunt. Bears used to be on the endangered list. Now, it seems, we could be on theirs.

Obama Knew About Fast And Furious In May 2010

By AWR Hawkins

Obama Knew About Fast And Furious In May 2010

Obama Knew About Fast And Furious In May 2010

AmmoLand Gun News

AmmoLand Gun News

Washington DC - -(Ammoland.com)- To date Barack Obama, the dispenser of hope and change and the presiding officer over the least transparent presidency in history, has claimed he only learned about Fast and Furious earlier this year.

However, with each new document dump Obama’s timeframe seems to be as inaccurate (or as purposely misleading) as Attorney General Eric Holder’s.

For example, just months after he took office it was evident he was focused on a Fast and Furious-like operation, ostensibly aimed at cutting down on gun trafficking on the southern border.

Thus, on March 24, 2009, Deputy Attorney General David Ogden made the following announcement:

The President has directed us to take action to fight [Mexican] cartels…and Attorney General Holder and I are taking several new and aggressive steps as part of the administration’s comprehensive plan.

And the following month, April 2009, he stood beside Mexican President Felipe Calderón and uttered words we now recognize as hypocritical and duplicitous at best:

I continue to believe that we can respect and honor the Second Amendment right in our Constitution — the rights of sportsmen and hunters and homeowners that want to keep their families safe — to lawfully bear arms, while dealing with assault weapons that, as we know here in Mexico, are used to fuel violence.

Fast forward one year, and White House logs show that then-Deputy Attorney General Gary Grindler met personally with Obama four times between May 7 and May 19, 2010.

Just in case Grindler’s name doesn’t set off sirens in your mind, he had received an in depth briefing on Fast and Furious on March 12, 2010. (This briefing came via an ATF slideshow which I covered in a post for Big Government earlier this year.) During this same briefing, Grindler was provided with details concerning the number of times that a straw purchaser named Uriel Patino had purchased guns during Fast and Furious. (Patino’s total weapon acquisition numbered approx. 720 guns.)

By the way, Grindler is no longer a Deputy Attorney General. Rather, he is Holder’s Chief of Staff. So what do you figure he and Obama talked about when they met four times in May 2010?

Perhaps a better question is—do you think there’s any way they didn’t talk about Fast and Furious?

Even the LA Times admits Fast and Furious was at its height then, so I really don’t think Obama and Grindler used their meetings to plan Obama’s next vacation. Rather, I think Obama may have known about Fast and Furious nearly a year before he admits.

Looks like it’s time for Congressman Darrell Issa (R-CA) to broaden his inquiry into this mess.

Deer Season a Half Century Ago

By Dr. Paul Kengor

Deer Season a Half Century Ago

Deer Season a Half Century Ago

AmmoLand Gun News

AmmoLand Gun News

Grove City, PA --(Ammoland.com)- This week hunters across America storm the woods loaded for deer. For yet another indication of how times have changed, consider this account of Deer Season a half century ago:

My mother’s family lived in Emporium, Pennsylvania, as did dozens of their relatives. Emporium is a tiny town nestled in the mountains near the north/central part of the state. Back in the 1940s, when my mother was born, my grandmother had worked as a Rosie Riveter at the Sylvania plant. Some reading this article will remember owning a huge, heavy Sylvania TV—back when you got only three channels.

Sylvania employed half the town. Farming was another means of employment, which my grandfather and his parents and nine siblings had done down the road in Rich Valley.

Still, neither Sylvania nor farming nor anything else did much to populate tiny Emporium.

Once a year, however, the place was flooded with people. That time of year was Deer Season, when out-of-town hunters arrived like an incoming Army, loaded with rifles and bullets. “Army” is a good metaphor, given that a large portion of the hunters were World War II vets.

They came from the mills and mines of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. They came to shoot a deer.

During that special week, Emporium’s streets were bustling, the bars were jammed, and churches had more people than usual, including St. Mark’s, where hunters sought out the priest for a blessing before heading into the woods.

The lone hotel was full, leaving hunters looking for lodging. Some packed into makeshift hunting camps. Some slept in their cars. Sleeping in a car was no big deal to guys who had fought in Germany, France, the Battle of the Bulge. Nonetheless, they searched for a place with a roof, heat, a bathroom—which brings me to my main focus:

My grandmother always took in boarders during Deer Season. In fact, the whole town did. Up and down every street, hunters knocked on doors asking if the home was taking boarders. Bear in mind, these were complete strangers carrying guns and lots of ammunition. And yet, there was never any fear that they were a threat to a household.

“I never heard of any problems anywhere,” recalls my mother, who was a little girl when the hunters stayed at her house. “There was never any concern about the safety of anyone, including the kids. Today you can’t trust anyone. It was different then.”

It was very different. There was also a general trust of hunters, a trust I believe is still merited and shared in those areas. My Uncle Carl, my mom’s brother, says, “I still think that hunters are a special breed and even though they kill animals most are very caring, trustworthy, and law abiding.”

My uncle remembers my grandparents taking in so many people that he lost track.

“During hunting season our house was a zoo,” he says.

For a few dollars per person, my grandparents hosted two or three hunters per night, giving them a bedroom and maybe the backroom. The hunters marched inside with all their gear. As evening fell, early in the winter, my grandmother made dinner for everyone. They all shared a meal. The hunters talked and played and joked with the kids. After dinner, they got their equipment in order and went to bed—snoring loudly through the night.

Around 5:00 a.m., my grandmother made breakfast for the hunters, typically bacon and ham and eggs.

The meals were special. “I enjoyed the stories at night and breakfast in the morning as much as the hunting,” says my uncle.

Then they were off to the woods. If they shot a deer early, some headed straight back to Pittsburgh, hoisting the gutted carcass atop the Oldsmobile. Others, if they got a deer late, might return to the house, where my grandmother cooked up some venison. If they had no luck, they stayed another night or two.

Dr. Paul Kengor

Dr. Paul Kengor

This scene was repeated in house after house in Emporium. My Aunt Della, who lived across the railroad tracks and river, took in boarders in an apartment above her garage. She tended to get the same guys year to year. I’m sure her Rigatoni and meatballs were a factor.

Can you imagine this today? Any of this? Yes, the culture has really changed. America has changed.

Sons Of Guns Returns Wednesday, December 7 2011

Discovery Channel

Discovery Channel

Baton Rouge, LA --(Ammoland.com)- Will Hayden and his team of gunsmiths at Baton Rouge-based Red Jacket Firearms are hired to do the impossible: bring the USS Kidd back to life for a full-on battle re-enactment, build the world’s biggest flame cannon and restore a WWI Maxim machine gun so fires through a propeller.

All in a day’s work for Hayden and his team who embrace the motto “If you can dream it, we can build it.” This all-star team of craftsmen are featured in Discovery Channel’s hit series SONS OF GUNS.

In the season 3 premiere, “Will’s Floating Fortress,” premiering Wednesday, December 7th at 9PM e/p:

With all of the tragedy and hardship that’s fallen on Louisiana over the past decade, Will feels a personal duty to give back to his community. The Red Jacket crew decides to arm a new patrol boat for Sherriff Gautreaux to aid him in protecting the Gulf Coast from natural and criminal threats.

Will decides that the sheriff’s new patrol boat needs three additional weapons: a smoke grenade launcher mounted to the side rail, and a rear dual mount with a Mark 19 grenade launcher and an M240 Bravo machine gun. Once the project is complete, Will takes the Sheriff out on the water and proves the patrol boat is a force to be reckoned with.

Then, Will restores a valuable WWI German Luger for a veteran with a harrowing war story that he is reluctant to tell. Finally, Kris needs to give an answer to Will’s ultimatum.

In the end, what will Kris choose: Stephanie or Red Jacket?
