Marlin To Close in 2011

by Jay T March 26, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

Marlin Firearms will close their doors in 2011. This will result in a loss of 265 jobs and one of the oldest names in the firearms business.

Owned by Remington since 2007 Marlin is a household name among firearms owners. Obviously it isn’t making money but the name conjures up memories for many people when it comes to learning to shoot.

(Thanks to a reader for emailing me about this yesterday.)

Thursday Night Quotation

by Jay T March 25, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay
“Anyone can understand shooting to protect themselves. You give me five minutes and I’ll make anyone on this planet mad enough to shoot me. The real question is, will they have that much time in a fight? You need to make that decision before you start to fight-only your life depends on it.”

Tempers Flare Everywhere

by Jay T March 25, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

People have underestimated the anger out in the general populace. People I’ve been friends with for a long time are making comments that positively qualify as Jet Fuel Anger. It’s pointed squarely at politicians including the Democrats and many Republicans.

Frankly I’m not sure how far it reaches but it has gone far enough that the majority of people I have interacted with are taking the side of Bibi Netanyahu over Barack Obama. That is very telling especially as it includes people who are lifelong liberals. They contend they have seen the light and are shocked by the hubris of the President and Congress.

Inside I laugh at them because for years, like most of you, I have discussed these same issues always ending with “it will get much worse.” Which it will.

On Doctors, Tests and Firearms

by Jay T March 25, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

In a room of Cardiologists I sat mentally going through the steps I want to take to build my cabin out West. The white coated consultants discussed my test results. Though not terrible they aren’t good. They will know more in a few days which is Latin for “we want another visit.”

My heart is not performing as it should and that is cause for their concern. As they filed out I sat with one doctor and two nurses to await the command to go home and rest. The Doctor asked me if I had been following the Health-care Passage and I replied that’s why my heart is in other than perfect shape. He laughed.

Turns out the Doctor is a hunter, carries and is upset over what he perceives as an attempt to grab guns later down the line. I in turn wanted to focus him back on my health but we have a new understanding and one might say a common cause.

I am now home, resting, and researching heart problems. Thank you for the kind emails.

Congressman Reportedly Targeted

by Jay T March 24, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

The media is breathlessly reporting on the possibility a Congressman from Virginia was targeted when a propane line to a gas grill was tampered with and the sky is literally falling on the left. It came after a guy named Mike Troxel posted what he thought was the Congressman’s address online but actually the house belongs to the brother of said Congressman.

The blogger, Mike Troxel, is upset over the passage of health-care reform. In posting the address he told readers they should stop by and thank the congressman. Meh.

First let’s set aside the absurdity of this being a Class A major news story. Until it is confirmed someone did something, this is a hype story. By that I am referring to the propane gas grill line.

The Feds are all over it and this will make for a convenient excuse for bloggers to be targeted as unhinged. Some are on both sides but the vast majority are level headed people.

Some will say this is what happens when you defy the will of the people while others will say this proves the government needs more control over everyday lives.

Congress, left and right, should be held accountable by the people. This starts on the public square and at the ballot box. Debate and vote.

Obviously it goes without saying people are frustrated and they feel their votes don’t matter. That’s a subject for another post but as of now this is a story that smells.

Answering a Brady Supporter

by Jay T March 24, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

Someone from the anti-rights crowd found the blog and sent me an email asking why I thought I needed a gun. Rather than falling into the trap of trying to explain my position I offered up:

Firearms are a passion for me. Not just for self defense or hunting, firearms are often works of art and are often technological marvels. People who enjoy firearms do so for numerous reasons not usually discussed by anti-rights people such as yourself. That’s too bad because if you could move past your irrational fear you could begin to understand a firearm is a tool. Like other tools it does what the craftsman demands and, being a tool, is not responsible for a single evil act. No one holds paint responsible for a graphic painting because it is insanity. So too are those who see a gun as evil.

I got a reply about five minutes later. The person thanked me for taking time to answer and offering a description he had not considered before.

Is this a victory? No. It is instead a classic example of how the opposition uses people who don’t think to actually look at a position. Instead they simply chant the party line.

Buttocks Wounded In Discharge

by Jay T March 24, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

An off duty Police Officer for the University of Illinois-Chicago shot himself in the ass after his firearm discharged. He was carrying it in his waistband, a poor idea, and is now facing an investigation. This isn’t an accident in my humble opinion but is the result of carrying his firearm in a way that might cause a negligent discharge.

People have died carrying firearms in this manner.Use a holster.

Ten Rounds in Baltimore

by Jay T March 24, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

Ten rounds of .45 JHP in a city of 636,919. Hope he had a spare magazine. According to the Baltimore Sun:

A police stop of a gold Corvette in Northeast Baltimore this month led authorities to a house on Holder Avenue over the weekend that had a cache of unregistered weapons including a World War II-era grenade, a Baltimore police spokesman said Monday.

Michael Hudlicka, 59, was released on $35,000 bail stemming from his arrest after the traffic stop March 16 when police said he had a holstered .45-caliber handgun loaded with 10 hollow-point bullets. He could now face new charges besides possession of an unregistered handgun, according to police.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers searched the suspect’s house and found a .38-caliber revolver, a .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun, a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun, a .22-caliber revolver, a .32 caliber semiautomatic handgun, a 12-gauge shotgun and a .22 caliber rifle.

Scaling Everest

by Jay T March 23, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

Why, I have been asked today, did I create Rifles, Pistols & Jay? Several sharp retorts came to mind but alas the explanation is rather simple. I’ve had some issues with Wordpress and it is altogether frustrating. Blogger, despite limitations, is at least dependable in my own experience.

The other blog contains information but this blog may see nothing but links or an essay on the daily routine of a Soldier of Foot in the Kings Army. Or links. Or a firearm.

I guess the obvious answer is the blog was created because I wanted to do it.

Know Thy Firearm

by Jay T March 23, 2010 Rifles, Pistols, and Jay

This is a popular photograph that has gone around the world time and again but it points to a fundamental issue during times of stress – know thy firearm.

It’s easy to laugh but many people can’t change magazines or load in the dark. Without light they are lost and this too is the result of not knowing the small arms you own.

How often do you handle your pistol or rifle and think of how many ways something can go wrong?
